Description
Eylenbosch comes back to life in 2019, after almost 30 years of hibernation. Founded in 1886 by Emile Eylenbosch in Schepdaal, the Eylenbosch brewery grew into one of the most important producers of lambic and geuze in the last century, with an absolute high point at the 1958 world expo. Advantage of the industrial lager, and also Eylenbosch closed its doors and stopped production in the early 90s.
But luckily that wasn't the end of the story for this historic brewery. In 2018, Erik De Keersmaeker decided to focus on his passion after a number of other challenges. As the fifth generation of a brewery family from Kobbegem, De Keersmaeker brings the Eylenbosch brewery and its iconic beer back to life. He does this together with the young brewer Klaas Vanderpoorten and study friend Jeroen Lettens. The new Eylenbosch Brewery is dedicated to tradition and authenticity, and will brew its lambic using the traditional method and recipes.

15/III/24 - 37.5cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home (Gent), BB: 29/XI/31, bottled: 19/XI/21, batch nr: SOK21006A (2024-165)
Clear deep ruby red beer, small light pinkish red head, dissipates immediately. Aroma: nice, pretty fruity, lots of krieken, cherries, wood notes, a bit oxidized, some almonds. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: nice acidity up front, lemony, lots of sour cherries, a little bitter, funky, bret, more of a sharp acidity, hint of vinegar. Aftertaste: still very fruity, nice sour cherries, some marzipan, a little bitter, some tannins, a little funky.

Blend of the top-fermented blonde saison produced by Eylenbosch in anticipation of their lambic products and Eylenbosch lambic, resulting in what they refer to as a ‘wild ale’ (‘versnijbier’ is a term nobody seems to use anymore these days…). Thanks Craftmember for sharing. Snow white, moussey, membrane-lacing, frothy, stable head, initially clear orange-glowing ‘old gold’ robe with lots of visible sparkling, turning hazy and warm peach-orange further on. Aroma of dried orange peel, old oak wood, sweat, lemon zest, sour peaches, crabapple, thyme, young southernwood, unripe mandarin, sourdough, dry white wine, Napoleon candy (not brandy). Crisp, dryish onset, lots of sour apple, unripe stonefruit and unripe mandarin, astringent but still smooth and gentle (for a sour ale); fizzy carb, smooth body, a wheat-bready core under ‘malse’ lactic acidity and ongoing tart fruitiness, but somehow feeling a tad ‘softer’ and ‘rounder’ than e.g. Eylenbosch Oude Geuze – with vague spicy phenols (thyme) in the end which I would also link more to the saison part than to the lambic part. Still, the lambic – as it tends to do – has almost completely taken over here, with lovely drying woody tannins, citric and ‘wild’ stonefruit elements and general fruity lactic acidity with fresh, vivid character; a late yet confident wormwoody hop bitter note also reminds me of the saison rather than the lambic again. Enough remainders of the saison are to be found, but as said, it is the lambic which rules supreme here, turning this blend into a very crisp, elegant and smooth sour. Loved it.

The follow-up to ‘Prematuurke’, this time a full-fledged geuze with sufficiently old lambic to meet the strict mathematical demands set forth by the legislator – so now the revived Eylenbosch lambic brewery (not to be confused with Boerenerf, the owner of which is also called Eylenbosch) can play along with the big guys, I guess one could say. Bottle of 37.5 cl with cork and muselet from Dranken Vanquathem in Zedelgem. Egg-white, moussey, quite thick and frothy, shred-lacing head on an initially clear apricot blonde robe with fine sparkling, turning hazy and deeper ‘orangey’ further on. Aroma of lemon juice, old oak wood, young wormwood and sorrel leaves, green gooseberries, dry beech leaves, green plums, dandelion, unripe peach, minerals, old leather. Crisp onset, very fizzy effervescence (champagne-like – as expected from the style) with lots of fruitiness hinting at unripe peach, gooseberry, sour green plum and green apple, even rhubarb; dryish and tart, even lemony, but not too acetic. Smooth and soft wheaty-bready core under drying yet fruity lactic acidity and ongoing ‘green’ fruitiness, working towards a very woody finish even for the style, emphatically tannic and oaky – but the tart fruitiness at that point still remains vivid and sparkling enough to keep everything in balance, the lemony streak bringing fraîcheur and crispness till the end. Woody and lemony, yet ‘full’ geuze, fuller than Prematuurke indeed, with enough body and complexity to qualify as a very good example. Enjoyed this one a lot, perhaps even more than I was hoping for.
