Brouwerij Serafijn (prev. Microbrouwerij Achilles)

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Bottle: Very well sealed, made a cap gun popping sound when opened. Poured a luciant brown with slight orange tint. There is lines of nice bubbles that start at the bottom of the glass and stream to make a white head. The aroma is full of fruit and bubble gum. The taste is sweet caramel malt with a spicy tingle to the taste buds.

Bottle pours out a cloudy amber topped with a foam head almost 1 mile tall. A nice tast of sweet fruit and some spice. Not to bad. Thanks Jake for letting me have some.

33 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange to light amber with a little semi fizzy off-white head. Spiced and light metallic aroma. Fizzy carbonated mouthfeel. Flavour is mild caramel malt and distinct spiced. Mild yeasty note into the finish. Lingering fruity and spiced finish into a solid bitterness. Mild caramel note in the far finish. Wellbrewed, but nothing great.

Bottle: Murky reddish brown with a huge beige head. Aroma is fruity and warming. The 8% ABD is easily noticable tonight. Sweet fruity and malty notes are second. Tastes muddled with bready malts, yeast, dark fruit, and more warming. It was good, but for whatever reason, I just couldn’t really get into this brew. Seemingly average to me at this point.

33cl bottle: Pours dark amber/brown with a lasting white head. Aroma is complex of berries, malts, caramel, yeast & dark fruits. Filling & smooth body/texture. Yeast & caramel/toffee dominates - lightly sweet & pleasant. There is a tiny scent of metal lying underneath - but no harm is actually being done. Quite tasty & nice Belgium strong overall!
