The quad in this Bruges la Morte series by Fort Lapin, referring to the title of a 19th-century novel by Georges Rodenbach, a relative of the founder of the Rodenbach brewery. Thanks tderoeck for sharing. Thick and frothy, membrane-lacing, pale yellowish beige head on a clear mahogany brown beer with bronze core. Aroma of toasted brown bread, tree leaves, iron shavings, nutmeg, clove, dry caramel, old ‘jenever’, some brown honey and a whiff of coffee grounds. Dried fig and baked banana in the onset with a dash of prune, sweet with medium carb; full mouthfeel, but with a metallic ‘zing’ to it due to doubtlessly added iron. Brown-bready, dry-caramelly maltiness with a nutty edge and a toasty bitterish aspect, combining with a leafy hop bitter element but also this annoying iron effect; warming, brandy-like alcohol in the finish. The iron bothered me a bit and the toastiness here is outspoken enough to qualify as a Scotch rather than a typical quadrupel. Decent enough, but not worth going out of your way to find it.

Late-hopped tripel by Bruges brewery Fort Lapin, referring to Georges Rodenbach’s novel “Bruges-la-Morte” (1892); thanks tderoeck for sharing. Medium sized, eggwhite, frothy head over a hazy golden blonde robe with apricot tinge. Aroma of unripe peach, old bread crust, raw potato, grass, raw green cabbage, parsley, cotton cloth, ‘jenever’, blue limestone. Green-fruity onset, hard pear and unripe banana, minerally and lively effervescence, sweetish touch (apple) with soft, smooth body; white-bready maltiness with some light honeyish residual sugariness on top, meeting a grassy and herbal hoppiness in the finish, quite long and bitter (the effect of late hopping indeed), adding that odd parsley-like aroma again. Alcohol remains relatively well hidden. Technically decent tripel, very correct and drinkable – but adding nothing to the already vast tripel landscape in Belgium.

Aftertaste: pretty bitter, a bit hoppy, lots of alcohol, banana and banana peel, a bit metallic in the finish.

Bière bouteille 33 cl. La mousse est abondante mais retombe vite. Nez sur la levure belge, pointe d'acidité. En bouche, un peu trop d'acidité à mon goût.

Blonde aromatized with jasmin, brewed at Fort Lapin for a hobby brewer (Bart Dewulf) going commercial under the name Hops Meet Friends; bottle from Restaurant-Traiteur Toulouse in Ghent. Gusher, foam bursting into a towering high, very bath foam-like, dense, egg-white, firmly remaining head; hazy yellow blonde robe with ochre-ish tinge. Aroma of halfripe banana, coriander seed, raw turnip, indeed a whiff of blossoms but more reminiscent of sweet melon and apple blossom than actual jasmin, old potato mash, green pear, honey, damp straw, minerals, vague touch cumin seed (probably just that jasmin again). Sweet onset, banana and pineapple ester with a touch of ripe pear, lively carbonated, supple body; pale malt-bready core, cereally, with some honeyish residual sweetness on top, finishing with powdery coriander seed effects and some grassy hops, along a hint of warming alcohol (very badly hidden at this modest ABV) and that blossomy effect of jasmin, again not very jasmin-like but more like sweet apple and something herbal. Nothing technically wrong here apart from the gushing perhaps, but again an utterly stereotypical blonde with a twist neither sophisticated nor strong enough to convince me. Rather boring, in all, and not my cup of (jasmin or other) tea...
