Description
Hugel is the brewing company name of Koen Hugelier. After training in pharmaceutical and biological techniques and medical laboratory technology, Koen Hugelier worked for almost ten years at Ghent University on various scientific studies. In 2009 he became a certified zythologist and in this way got hold of the brewing bug. Because Hugelier could use a lot of knowledge from his training, it was quite easy to delve into the secrets of brewing. After some hobby brewing, Koen Hugelier was ready in 2010 to brew one of his beers in a 'big' brewery.

Brouwfirma Hugel brouwt biologische, artisanale bieren in brouwerij 'The Brew Society' in Heule.

The fourth beer in this series made by an avid zythologist and hobby brewer, a series which should encompass seven beers in total, with one single beer released per year, each one dedicated to the seven deadly sins. This is the one dedicated to the sin of pride - but in a Belgian context, it cannot be proud enough as far as I’m concerned. Bottle from a supermarket in the southern Netherlands (ironically perhaps). Medium thick, regular, quite dense and stable, egg-white head with a fair amount of cobweb-like lacing, over an immediately hazy, peach blonde beer with salmon pinkish tinge. Aroma of mouldy old orange peel, soggy white bread, moist ginger powder, old potatoes, peach, old cloves, caramel, dried apricots, banana, wormwood leaves, old dried tarragon, moist clay, baking powder, dandelions, red apple, young ’jenever’. Fruity onset, hinting at peach and banana (as is usually the case with Belgian tripels), with a vague sourishness around it; carbonation is quite edgy, minerally, accentuating the sourishness. ’Full’, more or less smooth mouthfeel, bready and lightly caramelly malt body with ongoing fruity esters and upcoming spicy, clove-like phenols, yet no medicinal or otherwise disturbing effects, just classically Belgian. Ends earthy and bittering, with an enjoyable yeasty breadiness releasing spicy phenolic effects retronasally and blending with a relatively firm, yet very earthy, bit spicy and floral, even lightly grapefruity hop bitterness, followed by a glow of ’jenever’-like alcohol. Your classic, traditional Belgian tripel - but admittedly a bottle that has been standing on a supermarket shelf for weeks (or longer, who knows) is probably not the best way to rate this, I can imagine this beer showing more elegant and expressive hop character when it was young. Still, a very stereotypical Belgian in all respects, in spite of the ’modern’ hopping - the guy that makes this, should have been a bit more adventurous, especially considering the fact that he has given himself a whole year to develop a new beer each time. Compare this with craft breweries that belch out new beers all the time... But still, decent enough and technically more than correct, that much is clear.

Taste is on the sweet side which is fitting for this kind of Belgian strong ale. Mouthfeel is creamy and finish is really long and soft. Very nice beer.
