Description
Hugel is the brewing company name of Koen Hugelier. After training in pharmaceutical and biological techniques and medical laboratory technology, Koen Hugelier worked for almost ten years at Ghent University on various scientific studies. In 2009 he became a certified zythologist and in this way got hold of the brewing bug. Because Hugelier could use a lot of knowledge from his training, it was quite easy to delve into the secrets of brewing. After some hobby brewing, Koen Hugelier was ready in 2010 to brew one of his beers in a 'big' brewery.

Brouwfirma Hugel brouwt biologische, artisanale bieren in brouwerij 'The Brew Society' in Heule.

On tap at the Brugge Beer Festival 2023, Brugge, Belgium. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, caramel, dark fruit taste/aroma. There is a hint of chocolate too. Really nice strong Belgian.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a large thick foamy white head. Aroma is fruity with a mixture of citrus, tropical and stoney fruit notes. Taste is again juicy with orange, tangerine and peaches with a pithy citrus linger, a little caramel and also a touch of sweetness. Nicely balanced. Medium to full body with fairly low carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle @ Teamleader kitchen. Hazy golden, small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of old plum, white grape, melon, milk going sour, potato, dry bread. Taste has sweetish plum, apple & grape over a bready malt base; citric, bit lactic accent (milk again). Grassy hoppy finish with spicy clove, yellow fruits & yeast, soft alcohol glow. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Odd notes here and there, bad batch perhaps?

I’ve got a 33 cl bottle of Invidia that Belgian Happiness sent along a few months ago. We’re having a superb fall evening, time to sample a dark Belgian ale. The look in my snifter is a brown-black liquid with a light tan skim that refuses to leave. The scent is appropriately good with dark fruit, red cherries and bread. The drink is, well, it’s good also. Black plums, chocolate surprisingly, grain, malt, leather, cherries again and some earthiness. A touch of sourness that is more than offset by a fruit sweetness. A fine beer, glad to have it to taste.

Bottle 33cl. @home poured into a tumbler. Soapy medicinal nose. Hazy medium golden colour, tall loose frothy white head, slowly dissipating irregularly, patchy lacing. Medicianl aroma, herbs, ginger, anise seed, lemon peel, apricot, yeast. Taste restrained medicinal notes, apricot, light banana, herbs, spices, yeast/dough, Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, aromatic sweetbitter aftertaste, herbal and spicy notes till the end, outspoken but quite nice actually.
