The fourth and - to my knowledge - most recent Orvélo beer from this Halfzeven 'bierfirma', 75 cl bottle bought at Den Hopduvel in Ghent. Egg-white, cobweb-lacing, thick but uneven-bubbled, stable head on an initially clear, pure amber-coloured beer with glowing orange hue and lively visible fizz, misty with sediment. Aroma of indeed unmistakable (though not overpowering) 'Bretty' horseblanket, glue, bread crust, dried apricot, vague pineapple, lightly toasted pine nuts, chewing gum, stale sweat, goat stable, clove, grass, apple peel. Fruity onset but not sweet, unripe peach, banana peel, apricot; fizzy carb, slick body, a tad bubblegummy and even glueish perhaps. Peanutty and bread-crusty maltiness under a growing 'wild' Brett effect - Michael Jackson's classic 'horseblanket' indeed, stale urine even, damp hay, yet still remaining in balance with the clean, slick malt profile. Floral, somewhat leafy hop bitter note in the end, but remaining friendly; unripe fruit accents linger on. Clearly 'Bretted', though for me this effect could have been even stronger; (successful) attempts were clearly made to keep it within certain limits, so as to let the malt speak as well. Personally I don't think this would have been an interesting beer without the Brett, so this was a good idea as far as I am concerned - very clearly inspired by Orval, which I suspect has been the source of inspiration for the brand's name all along (next to the 'vélo', French for bicycle, of course). Could perhaps become more Brett-forward and thus more interesting with some age on it?

2 November 2019. 75cl bottle at Brocante Café Quiz, Bruges. Cheers, Ian & Cedric! Pours hazy ochre with a lasting, small, foamy, off-white head; lots of lacing. Aroma of yellow apple, banana peel, white bread, yeast, citrus, kitchen herbs. Taste is medium fruity sweet, banana & apricot over a bready-yeasty base, some bitter, generic spices & touch of sourish wheat. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, yeasty, some unripe fruit, slightly warming jenever-like alcohol. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Pleasant enough, somewhat of a Westmalle clone thanks to that creaminess mostly, but far from equal of course.

Bottle. Thanks Tim. Creamy, bubble gum, light spice, yeasty, smooth. Alright. Touch of citrus, quite like it.

Bottle. Blonde, hazy. Malty hay-like floral hoppy yeasty aroma. Full bodied. Yeasty floral hopbitter flavor Some bready notes. Not bad, but less yeast and more hoppy citric dryness wouldn’t hurt.

24 February 2019. Wieze Bierfestival - cheers to Meeki, Ama Deke & the lovely Anke! Hazy brown with a lasting, thin, foamy, tan head; some lacing. Aroma of caramel, raisin, licorice, brioche, candi sugar, peanuts, green tea. Taste is medium malty sweet, notes of caramel, candi sugar & dough, vague dried fruits; light to medium herbal bitter then, green tea, a bit spicy, some licorice, aniseed & nuts. Dryish, malty finish, faint herbal hops, lingering caramel & candied fruit. Medium body, slick-syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. Actually well-made & tasty, just cliché of course.

Sampled at Wieze 2017. Pours unclear yellow. Nearly no head. Smell is wheat, bit sweet. Taste is bit bitter. Rather one-dimentionnal. Bit spiced. Mild grainy notes. OK

New addition to this commissioned Orvélo range, tasted at GBF. Thick, frothy, lacing head over a hazy ochre blonde beer. Aroma of ripe banana, baker’s yeast, jute, raw potato, dried grass, sourdough, crabapple. Fruity onset, banana as is to be expected but also hints of peach and gooseberry, medium fizz, soapy wheat and somewhat thin, grainy barley maltiness in the middle, yeasty to even a tad starchy, sourish touch, earthy finish. I like a good German Hefeweizen - in fact, I tend to prefer them over Belgian witbier, but so far I have never encountered one from outside of southern Germany which can rival the classics; this one cannot change that, I’m afraid. Too earthy, lacking in refined phenolic spiciness, insufficiently bready in its barley component and a bit too messy.
