Description

Hazy blond with a lacy head. It’s very wheaty, fresh and clean. Nice, dry finish.

2 November 2019. 75cl bottle at Brocante Café Quiz, Bruges. Cheers, Ian & Cedric! Pours hazy ochre with an unstable, thin, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of unbaked bread, yeast, wheat, cheese, pepper, green banana. Taste has light sweet yellow apple, bready maltiness, quickly soapy-wheaty sourness kicks in, with bitter pepper & clove. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, more yeast & generic spices. Light to medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Still not impressed by this one. Missing a clear estery & German profile. Original rating: 20 August 2016. At Gents Bierfestival.

Thank you for sharing! Sampled 750 ml. bottle @ Gents Bierfestival 2016. Hazy orange, little creamy white head. Nose is like a caricature, low fish guts yeast, soap, lots of soap, dull stale wheat, plastic sweet. Taste is dull fish guts yeast, largely sweet plastic & soap, paper, sugar,… Body is soapy. Caricature, not too pleasant even if technically there is nothing wrong with it.

After the Orvélo Tripel, this dubbel version was added. Medium thick, moussy, regularly shaped, pale greyish tan head leaving light lacing and sitting atop a dark burgundy beer with vermillion hue, initially clear and fully translucent but hazy with deposit, with low fizz. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, coriander seed, overripe pear, dried tree leaves, chestnut, white pepper, dried banana, hints of ginger powder, stewed apple, milk chocolate bar, dry earth, liquorish and cinnamon - in all, very cliché for a Belgian dubbel, but fortunately free of off-flavours and in that sense quite inviting. Sweetish onset of candied fig, banana with brown sugar and raisin with only a basic sourishness for balance, but the sweetness remains restrained and elegant, not becoming cloying at any point; carbo is medium and just fit for this style, mouthfeel is lean, supple and a bit resinous. Full, pleasant caramelly malt sweetness is the main theme here, but it has a nutty and eventually even subtly toasted bitterish edge working well with the herbal, earthy, gentle hop bitterness in the end; aftertaste is therefore agreeably bittersweet, something which is further accentuated by the obligatory dosis of soapy coriander seed, with some lingering esters (yet quite subduedly so for a Belgian dubbel), a liquorish-like flavour and a glow of warming, brandy-like alcohol all the way at the back. Earthy and stereotypical, but otherwise fairly ’clean’ and technically very well-executed example of a Belgian dubbel, with a good balance of sweet and bitter. I quite like this, no matter how predictable it may be, and I would even recommend this as a perfect introduction to this style, though it would benefit from a tad less coriander, like so many other Belgian ales.

27th June 2015: 0.75 litre bottle (from De Bierboom, Brugge) split between five of us. Deep amber pour with a beige/off-white head. Malts first with this brew in both the aroma and taste: semi-sweet with toffee and caramel to the fore. Fruity feel within the flavours but mostly malty molasses being calmed down by a decent hop backing.
