Description

Bottle. Color: Clear golden, white head. Aroma: Fruity apple, rural funk. Taste: Fruity apple and hints of citrus, oak wood, rural funk notes, some hay and minerals. Hints of old hop. Moderate tart. Dry-ish finish. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Well balanced and nice complexity, as always with Girardin Black. My go-to Oude Geuze... Never disappointing.

Backlog March 2009. Clear, deep reddish body with almost no head. Lovely fruity aroma dominated by raspberries and acidic lemon. Taste is acidic fruity but also surprisingly sweet at the same time. Strong on the fruity berries and mild on the funk, quite smooth and as an overall impression I find it well made and balanced in a gentle way.

Sample from jerrycan at Carnivale Brettanomyces 2025, h.ertie blending workshop. Didn't take many notes, just enjoyed good beers and good company. What I do remember: 3 months old. Hazy. Malty, light tartness, some (yeasty?) bitterness. Dry. Definitely needs more time.

a small bottle, caged and corked, purchased from the brewery, and drunk at Dad’s place while home on holiday. Aroma: not especially sour, but the funk is there. Appearance: semi-opaque dark amber, orange-tinged lacing. Palate: medium-bodied and tart, quite lively carbonation; finish is long, complex and well-balanced, rather chewy. Taste: sour flavour is predominant though understated, some sweet notes. Fresh yeast, rice wine, a lick of old belt. Great palate on this one, feels like having eaten something nutritious.

NL/BEL excursion day 8: a small bottle, caged and corked, purchased from the brewery, and drunk in the courtyard of A. de J. ‘Generation Europe’ in Brussels. Aroma: complex and inviting, 70s era homebrew meets canned plums. Appearance: clear bronze, no head to speak of. Palate: light-bodied and tart, average carbonation; long and complex finish, ending on a dry note. Taste: lightly sweet with understated sour notes, very well balanced. Background flavour of fresh yeast. Not so funky, but I really liked the sherry-like kick.
