Description

NL/BEL excursion day 8: a small bottle, caged and corked, purchased from the brewery, and drunk in the courtyard of A. de J. ‘Generation Europe’ in Brussels. Aroma: it smells just like vin de table. Appearance: clear Ribena, had dissipates in a jiffy. Palate: light-bodied and tart, rather soft carbonation; finish is pretty dry. Taste: lightly sweet, the sour flavour remains in the background; well-balanced. Pretty strong cherry flavour, a not unpleasant taste of fresh yeast in the background. I really enjoyed this one, I felt it was nutritious and doing me good.

750mL bottle at the International Lambic & Kriek festival. Pours murky gold with a white head. Tons of musty old barrels on the nose. Flavour has dusty old furniture, mildew, leather. Very nice.

Bottle from Brussles, on a boat ride around Alkmaar. Citruses, grass, light apples, funk, mid-high acidity, fairly complex and pretty pleasant

Dark copper pour, with a small white head. A soightly funk barnyard aroma, with some minerals and quite a bit of sweetness. There are touches of stone fruits, and the funk is quite dialed back, which i expected for the style. I can see how this is much more approachable to lambic beginners.

bottle given to me by a firned who picked one up for me recently on a trip in Belgium. Typical hazy yellowish color. Lovery Barnyard aroma, but it’s lacking a bit in bite. The flavour is a nice sooth funk, but a little dubbed down, i can see why this isnt as high as the Black Label. Still very good, but not as bold as the black.

Wow. Incredibly complex aroma of fruit, tart apple, brett funk, cellar notes, wood. Flavour is masterfully tart, well-balanced sourness. Finish is very dry. Really, the balanced and compelling way the aroma and flavour interplay is a stroke of brilliance. Best Gueuze I’ve had to date, and probably one of my favourite beers altogether. I will drink this at every opportunity.
