Description
Brasserie Caracole Brewing Company is a small brewery located in a small town of Falmignoul, Wallonia in Southern Belgium. It is home to the last of the wood-fired brewing kettles in Europe. Their limited technology, elbow grease style of brewing makes them an incredibly romantic and fantastic brewery. Its name was derived from a spiral snail shell that is translated into ‘Caracole.’ Since its establishment, the Brasserie Caracole Brewery has been distributing beers to various countries like France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium and Japan. It is famous for four traditional Belgian beers; the Prancing, the Troublette, the Sax and the Nostradamus. All four beers are bottle undergo bottle conditioning where they go through second fermentation with yeast in the bottle. This special type of fermentation has allowed for outstanding flavors and quality of beers to be produced by Brasserie Caracole Brewery.

Sedimented chestnut brown colour. Aroma of alcohol, spice (cinnamon) but also pungent and phenolic. Stinging alcohol palate, hint of barnyard, swirling lively fruitiness (passion fruit, cherry, rambutan). I don't know if I've been able to convey a positive impression of this beer based on what's written down, but it really is fun and highly drinkable. Certainly better than the sum of its part.

This Belgian White really reminded me of the Witkap Pater Singel I tried over the summer. Biting, lemony aroma. Body is very cloudy banana orange-yellow, with plenty of yeast sediment. Flavor is lemony, sour, and tangy. Decidedly different for a Witbier. Refreshing.

Yellow beer; thick broken-white head, kept up by effervescent carbonation. Nose of unripe grain ("milk-ripe"), bit grassy, going over into "Belgian pickles"-mustardy. This "B. pickles aroma creeps in in the taste too - yet not really sourish. Malt sweetness is very present, but kept in check by various other flavours, estery and flowery (lunaria - once more). Very alcoholic mouthfeel, yet surprisingly refreshing. Very interesting brew. Description as "B. pickles" might be misleading as it sounds too negative by far. But it DOES remind me instantly of this. A better than average strong blond.

Huge white head, quickly diminishing. Hazy gold-yellow beer, champenoise pearling. Wheat, very citrussy, flowery nose. Refreshing acidity around grain, wheat, flour, mannah. A bit lactic (buttermilk)character. Lemony finish. Light mouthfeel, refreshing. Long grainy, yeasty aftertaste. A quite OK wit.

Dark foxy-amber, clear. Yellowish head, rather big bubbles, going down lacey. Very nutty aroma, "eggbread" (=sweet, yellow, soft bread). Soapy, perfumed, estery. Sweet liqueur - alcohol included. Taste comes with sweet caramel, slightly roasted touch. (Sweet) bready, yeasty flavour. Fruity too - preserved prunes or plums, cherries, even brambles or figs. I'm wondering about Indra's fusel alcohols. Possible, not evident. Finish is again very nutty (walnut, hazelnut, Brazilian) Very well-bodied. Alcohol evident - warming, long. The soapiness from the nose returns ("bubblegum"?). La Caracole is a feast for the senses - including the esthetic thanks to the labels. I loved the brewery and its products from the moment F. Tonglet was still brewing above Namur. I still do.

The aroma is fruity with strong notes of yeast. The color is an unclear amber with an OK head. The flavor is malty sweet with strong yeast notes. The alcohol prickles the tongue. An OK beer.

Sampled at From The Vine monthly beer tasting Aug 4th, 2003: This beer was a pleasant surprise. Dark golden-amber with a medium off-white head. Thin lacing. Aroma is well-spiced, with some wheat, citrus and vanilla thrown in as well. Medium-bodied with caramel, spice (cinnamon), fruit and malt flavors. The finish is long and smooth and a little on the sweet side. Overall a very drinkable Belgian.
