Description
Brasserie Caracole Brewing Company is a small brewery located in a small town of Falmignoul, Wallonia in Southern Belgium. It is home to the last of the wood-fired brewing kettles in Europe. Their limited technology, elbow grease style of brewing makes them an incredibly romantic and fantastic brewery. Its name was derived from a spiral snail shell that is translated into ‘Caracole.’ Since its establishment, the Brasserie Caracole Brewery has been distributing beers to various countries like France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium and Japan. It is famous for four traditional Belgian beers; the Prancing, the Troublette, the Sax and the Nostradamus. All four beers are bottle undergo bottle conditioning where they go through second fermentation with yeast in the bottle. This special type of fermentation has allowed for outstanding flavors and quality of beers to be produced by Brasserie Caracole Brewery.

Bottle: Poured a quite clear golden beer with a huge thick foamy head with good retention. Aroma was midly sweet probably from orange peels that were added to this beer. Taste was quite refreshing with again some sweetness (apricot?) and some wheat. Carbonation was OK and body a bit thinner then expected. Overall, this is not a bad wit but could be a bit more balanced with less of the wheat taste.

Bottle at Brewtopia ’04 Deep amber color with an aroma of sweet caramel and hints of anise and spice. Sweet caramel flavor, slightly spicy. Slight alcohol in the finish. Decent Belgian offering, but there are so many other better Belgian beers to compare this to and this offers nothing to make it rise above the crowd.

Golden color. Very nice aroma, fresh, of spices and hops. Good body, with a residual sweetness, becoming soon quite dry and spicy. Some malt, and a reasonable hopping.

Given the other ratings I have seen for this beer I suspect that the bottle I purchased was defective in some way. Until I get another chance to try this one, this is my rating. +++Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle the beer pours a medium brown color with no head at all. Faint odor of sour apple and caramel. The palate was flat. the flavor was sour, fruity and vinegary. Drain pour.

Undated 11.12 oz bottle. Aroma of dark, rich malts, light yeast presence, with some vinous notes and spicy hops. Looks very dark for an amber, quite dark brown/orange, light haziness, and a good beige head. Flavor is robust, full bodied and quite complex for a belgian amber. Good wine-like notes, dark berry flavors, spicy yeast and hops mixed with a moderately sweet malt flavoring. Thins out towards the end, but flavor stays fairly sweet throughout.

Undated 11.12 oz bottle. Pours a bright orange-red color, quite darker than I expected. Good amount of haziness. Small white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, light malting, and some delicate, perfumy hops. Lightly spicy. Flavor is just about as archetypically belgian ale as I can think of. Perfect delicate balance, yeast used to create a good, complex flavor, but dosent get out of control. Medium body, light bready, caramelly malting. Wonderful.

Light hazy yellow. Spice in the nose, tiny amounts of clove and pepper. Lighter in the mouth, with clean wheaty malts. Dry finish. Overall one of the cleaner versions of a wit but nice enough and drinkable.

My wife’s favorite Belgian beer - though one that we do not see in this market much anymore. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this brew pours a hazy dark red/brown color with a very small tan head. The scent is of sweet molasses and mildly of ripe fruit. The flavor is mildly bitter with a decent malt presence and elements of nut, fruit, molasses and chocolate. The molasses and fruit linger on the aftertaste. This beer also really improves as it gets warmer.

A dark yellow beer with a dense white head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of yeast - just like a Belgian blonde should be. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of yeast and a slightly dry hoppy end. An OK beer - but nothing special.

This beer certainly doesn’t lack for flavor. Pours cloudy brown with a medium (becoming thin) light tan head. Aroma of bubblegum and fruit, especially cherry, and also touches of chocolate and caramel. Very rich, intense flavor with sweet/sour apple peel and tangy, tart cherry. Yeast esters and phenols are abundant. Very spicy (perhaps coriander, and even ginger) finish. Borderline cloying but just subtle enough to avoid being over-the-top. One of the few Belgians I’ve sampled that is dominated by apple peel yet yields an abundance of other interesting flavors. Very nice.
