Description
19th century land-use plan of the area mentions a brewery owned by a certain Petronnella De Troch.
Even older records indicate that her father, Pieter De Troch, was running a brewery on the same site in the late 18th century. Petronnella married Egidius De Troch and in 1898 their son Louis took the family business over. Louis Married J. De Neve, and their son, also Louis, inherited the brewery and farm in 1936. The same Louis married M.L. Van den Moortel.
Their nephew Jos Raes and his wife M. Vanderhasselt took on the family tradition in 1974 and have been running this rare craft brewery ever since. In 2002, their son Pauwel Raes joined his parents into the family business.
In July 2012 Pauwel & his wife Kristel Schelfthout took over the brewery to continue the brewery tradition !

Aroma of champagne and yeast. looks like a golden pilsner with sediment floating in it. Flavors of sugar, yeast, and lemon. Mildly sour. I was surprised by how good this is. Better than the raspberry.

Rather ugly hazy amber colour. Aroma and palate are sweet & sour with lemon notes and a healthy dose of sugar. Same as all the other Chapeaus, just with a different fruit flavour. Lemon is ok for lambics so it's more tolerable that some of their other ones.

this is a pretty lame lambic, more like a woodchuck cider than anything. Has a nice orange color and looks dense. otherwise do not waste your time.

Pale brown-amber; rim of foam. Imagine a X-mas stall, sprayed white with a chemical foam and surrounded with pine branches. Then somebody dropped a load of wild mushrooms next to it, and clearly forgot about them. That's for the nose. The taste. Sweet. Sweeter. Sweetst. Syrup, of the cough variety. Maple as well. GODS! Medium bodied. AARGH. GUEUZE?? --- Beer aliased from original tick of Chapeau Xmas Gueuze on 23 Aug 2021 at 07:03

Cloudy, dull dark tan appearance. Aroma shows brettanomyces at first, followed by some sugar, then it gets plummy and syrupy with vague almond skin notes. Sweet & sour character like an oud bruin, but with the added yellow plum fruitiness. Definitely a dessert beer, as the sweetness grows more intense and gets cloying as you go.

Bottled, 2001 vintage. Brownish amber. Fruity aroma with marshmallows, banana and old horse blanket. Sweet, dusty and rounded, rounded and sugary with low carbonation. Sweet like faro, lightly vinous with a touch of very old strawberry jam. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Chapeau Xmas Gueuze on 23 Aug 2021 at 07:03

The flavor is strong of sweet cherries - somewhat artificial. The color is an unclear red-brown with next to no head. The flavor is very sweet with a hint of sour sharpness and strong artificial notes of cherries. It ends on a sour cherry note, that lingers. Definatly not a good kriek - the problem with this beer, is that it is added yeast (in a kriek?), sugar, and cherry juice - those three ingredients should be substituted by real cherries

Hazy red, pink-coloured head, little but lacey. Horrible smell of cabbage and bananaester. Sweet, artificial cherry smell. Puking sweet taste as of maraschino-cherries. Retronasal some aroma of almonds - a cherrykernel gone AWOL? Sticky mouthfeel, not even refreshing. Simply terrible - and to think he makes REAL kriek too!

The first beer I had to use a corkscrew to open. Also don't like to see the green bottle. Aroma is strong with sour raspbery. Light pink color, similar to cranbery juice. Flavor begins sweet, then sour raspberry. Finish of yeast and surprisingly some tobacco.

Just like the real gueuze Josh and myself seemed to have shared intercontinentally, De Troch used to make real kriek. AFAIK it is not made anymore. However - beerbars as Kulminator will still have it in stock. Similar label to the gueuze, red lettering. Mind you - only commercialism prevents Jos Raes to start tomorrow with this thing again. Brown-red-orange, clear beer (yeast all sticking to the bottle). Pink-brownish head, fast gone. Outspoken acidy nose. Fruity, but not outspoken cherries. Wood and woodstripper, esters too. Slight (decaying)cork smell. Restrained, but honest fruittaste, more openly cherry, but also strawberry, green apples, lemon, even pink grapefruit. Very woody, tannine-rich base. Strangely enough, the sourness is subdued and very agreable, like redcurrant lagered on oak. Slight smokey flavour retronasal - I suspect saccharine. Mouthfeel reasonably (fruit)chewy. Extremely refreshing. The first times I went around the brewery, I had to beg for this thing, kept in the most remote cellar, sold only locally and to some beerpubs. Only after long negations, they got convinced I really wanted the stuff. Madness! it is a GREAT kriek, immensely complex.
