Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

On tap at the Bocktown, nice place. Pale yellow and slightly hazy. Quarter inch craemy bubbly head. Aroma is a little fruity and even perhaps a little minty. On the palate we have good bubbly sensations for carbonation. Flavor is at first a tad sour then even a little tart, but not like a lambic. Funky in its own kind of way. Weird bitter finish builds on the back of the throat after each sip thru the session. S6L3F3T4o9

On draught at The Hope, Wandsworth (next door to Chez Bruce): Amber, small , stable and lacy off-white head; distinctive worty-hoppy nose with a - not unpleasant - barnyardy touch, pretty light bodied, moderate to stronger bitter-sweet flavour; increasing fruitiness and maltiness in the lingering bitter-sweet finish. Good session beer and a good appetizer before You enter the the culinary heaven of Chez Bruce............

Cask, White Lion, West Kirby. Amber colour with a medium creamy white head. Thin aroma; touch of yeast & malt . Sweetish and clean flavour with a dose of more malt and some light fruit. Medium bitter finish. All pretty straightforward and unremarkable, but drinkable.

500ml bottle, bought in Toronto. Medium to dark copper color with a bit of a lacy head. Lightish aroma of caramel malt, good hops, a touch of citrus, apples. Grass and pine as well. Hops dominate. Flavor also quite hoppy. Decent light fruits, citrus, grass and pine as well as apples. Slightly herbal. Light caramel malts. Dry, bitter, hoppy finish. A nice light best bitter. Not much that is original or attention-grabbing here, but not much to fault either. Good hopping. Not quite as complex as some of the bottled best bitters I have had. The malt is rather weak tasting.

[500ml bottle] My workmate Justin bought this back as a gift from Scotland, having bought it in DOune Castle where large parts of the Holy Grail movie were actually filmed (cheers Jus!). Pours a golden-brown with a large but diminishing white head. Moderate soft carbonation. Taste is honeyed, with some grass, dusty hops. The Black Sheep earthiness is still there, but less evident than in their other beers. In fact, overall I’d say this beer is a little on the bland & watery side for an ESB. Nevertheless, it’s very drinkable and more-ish, and far more pleasant than you expect for these sort of silly-name movie tie-in beers. Not bad at all.

Bottle. Poured amber with a thin fast dissipating head. Medium aroma with a bit of hop, and a bit of hay. Malty flavour with a good bitter edge. Rather flat finish, just drops of the table. And I must note that I didn’t notice any note, aroma or flavour of witch. But still a lekker session bitter or with a plate of fish and chips.
