Description
Hop Back Brewery Ltd was formed in October 1991 by John Gilbert and we moved to a small industrial unit in Downton, just south of Salisbury. After refurbishment and installation, brewing on the new 20 barrel plant started in June 1992.

In 2012 Hop Back celebrated its 25th birthday, having retained John’s original philosophy and passion for beers that he would want to drink.

Cask Conditioned, end of the cask
Very pale blond color. Quite nice aroma, fresh hops, citrus fruits. Lightly malty with a very good hop profile; begins a bit fruity, ends very close to a good Pilsner. Interesting.

(Bottle 50 cl) Slightly hazy golden beer with a creamy head. Appears desperate to leave the bottle as soon as the cap is removed. Soft, malty nose. Very light body with discreet notes of malt and a rather subdued bitterness. Very refreshing while cold, but gains more character as it warms while the hops start to leave a mark. 121205

[Cask at GBBF 2005] A brown beer with a thin off-white head. A very dark color for a Bitter. The aroma is quity light with nutty notes and esters. The flavor is nutty combined with roasted malt, leading to a good hoppy dry bitter end.

Bottle. About three past past the besy by date, but not flaws. Aroma has some citrus, light hops, and iron. A cloudy, gold colored beer. Light carbonation, some sediment, and a lasting white head. Several flavors; light malt, citrus, and with the foundation of a bitter. Finish is herbal and fairly dry. Pleasant and a well crafted beer but unremarkable.

Cask at The Royal Oak, Bank - Lyndhurst: Dark golden coloured, nearly no head to speak of; traces of lemony fruitiness in the aroma, but mainly a hoppy, floral nose, some resin; moderate to strong bitter flavour; enormous dry bitter-aromatic finish, the hops last very long on the tongue. Pleasant ! (7/2/6/2/13) Re-rated 3/3/06: (Bottle) Hazy, straw golden coloured, mid-sized fluffy white head, lacing; fruity (citruos) and distinctive floral hoppy nose, sweetish pale malt, too; moderate bitter, crisp and a bit yeasty flavour; medium bodied, dry hoppy bitter finish, a bit citrous. An easy drinking, but strong bitter. Very pleasant and moreish.................

Bottled. Dark amber. Papery aroma. Dry and ashy with some crystal amlt and clean, hard mouthfeel, low hop rate. Short, empty finish. Simplistic and uninspired. British beer? I guess so. Great? No way!
