Description
In 1794, Dorset rope and net makers, the Gundry family, built the Old Brewery on the banks of the River Brit in Bridport. Since then, there’s been non-stop brewing on this site. In the late 19th century, two Palmers brothers – John Cleeves and Robert Henry – bought the brewery and gave it their names: JC & RH Palmer. Today, their great grandsons, John and Cleeves Palmer, work in the company. As Palmers Brewery, it remains among the best of small independent brewers.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. This was labelled as IPA, the cheeky old school bitter peddlers. Aroma of malts and sour berries. An slightly opaque amber brown. Thin bubbly white head. Light bitter. Some berries/stewed fruit but also biscuits and boiled veg. Medium bodied. Slick. Soft to flat carbonation. Astringent finish. Underwhelming.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Vague caramel and malts aroma. A dark orange amber, verging on brow. Fluffy white head. Light bitter with a sour edge. Berries and... erm... glue. Medium bodied. Slick. Flat carbonation. Long finish. Not too keen on this. Odd chemical element to it.

Bottle at Claret & Ale Addiacombe. It pours darkest brown, near black with a medium beige head. The aroma is earthy, woody, oily, treacle, old leather sofa, rocky road and a touch of spice. The taste is dry, woody, leather, vinous almost, sticky treacle, black tea, leather, chewy malt, touch of charred wood, tannin, spice, hint of blackcurrant jam, dried fruit and plum with a dry, woody and spiced finish. Medium body and fine, foamy carbonation. Plenty of depth to it. Solid stuff.

Bottle at the Claret & Ale. It pour sclear deep brown with a decent beige head, The aroma is toasty malts, walnut, wood, dried fruit character, caramel and a touch of spice. The taste is of the same ilk... bitter - sweet, soft roasted malt, wood, leather, dried fruits, caramel, fruit cake and earth with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Pretty alright considering it is pasteurised, although the cask version is a touch more chaarcterful.
