Description
For nearly twenty five years, our mission here at Smuttynose has remained the same: to brew the best beer we can in a way we can be proud of. That includes honoring New England’s rich beermaking history, respecting our environment, and playing an active role in our community.

We value creativity, quality, authenticity and sustainability, but it really boils down to making great beers to enjoy with friends and family. We hope you love drinking our beers as much as we love brewing them. Cheers!

This generates an intensely creamy, dense head over a clear, copper colored body.Very pretty beer. The aroma is malt, yet lacks intensity. The flavor is overly hoppy and out of balance for a Bock as well. Needs more maltiness all around. Not to the same caliber as their Robust Porter. I like a good Bock and this just isn’t it.

[growler] Cloudy burnt-orange appearance with a slight head but nice, foamy lacing - the aroma is sensational - a wonderful mix of floral hops, sweet, candy-like malts, and a crisp spice - the flavor is quite toasty and biscuity, with a chewy mouthfeel, but yet it still manages to be crisp, spicy and quite hoppy - finishes with some caramel, some roastiness (almost a burnt flavor) and, eventually, a clean, tangy grapefruit flavor - this has a "from-the-cask" sort of quality to it that is hard to get without the cask (much like 60 minute IPA) - a great IPA, though I fear the West Coast IPA fans wouldn’t think it hoppy enough.

Quite black. Chocolatey aroma , hoppy and roasty. Very hoppy palate, with lots of roast and coffee notes. Two-dimensional but I do like the flavours.

Bottled. Hazy orange, rich head. Intense grapefruity hop aroma. Dry with light, clean, sparkling mouthfeel. Hoppy, very bitter finish. Nothing but pleasant hop juice. A simple, but very good beer

Pitch black colour with a nice generous brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, yeast and a bit of coffee-standard for an imperial stout. Strong bitterness up front with a large roasted malt profile with a bit of a coffee and chocolate sweetness. A bit of lactic sour feeling near the end. Aftertaste is fairly bittering for a long period with some chocolate flavours. Overall, not a full-bodied Imperial Stout that I was expecting and not too terribly different than what I'd expect. A decent beer, but not amazing. Definately good to try though! I split this 65 cL bottle with Jon (JonR888710), purchased at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Caramel coloured beer with a caramel and vanilla nose, with light floral hops. Good malts with nutty roasted finish, sweet aftertaste which blends with the bitterness very well. Round mouthfeel, with an interesting powdery body. mmmm...

Hazy amber beer with a malt and biscuit aroma. Crisp malts with floral hops, but slightly cardboardy in aftertaste (oxidized). Medium body which complement the hops well.

Nice banana nose with a light spicey end. Hazy yellow in colour. Crisp malts and light spices, with a touch of lemon, some bananas. Light bodied. Honest.

Jet black; dark brown head, gone in seconds. Nose of coffee, bit of tobacco-ash, hints of dark-blue fruit. Kahlúa or other coffee-liqueur? Very tobbacy-o taste - this is remarkable. The palate is quite bitter, the taste isn't. It just seems to beg to have raisins in it, or to be drunk with a smoked sausage or a good Italian salami. I want to taste some hops, but they just don't emerge. Warming up, I do get the taste of bitter chocolate, filled with the raisins and rum. And, of course, tobacco. Very full-bodied, rich, without getting oppressive. Anyway you look at it, this is an impressive beer, the more as this isn't really my style. "Kudo's" as they say. BIG thanks to D. Anderson for supplying me this row of beers, that made up my last few days of rating.

2004 draft @ Black Cow Hamilton, MA. Great caramel amber color with darker browns and some light golds. Wavy but not terribly hazy. Good mocha head. Aroma is rich for the style. Aromatic even on draft out of a convex glass. Caramel, touch of whiskey, black licorice and good amount of chocolate. Flavor is a firm, smooth chocolate malt, rich and silky with a good dose of hops, though nowhere near out of balance. Light liquor notes, like a bit of jager in there and just a full even body. As it warms, more of a toffee-nuttiness comes out with slightly more hops on the finish. As far as balance goes, this is one of the best (though maybe a touch too caramelly at the start. Best aroma of a brown I've smelled as well.
