I love IPAs. This was was a fine example of an American IPA. Hops and citrus (orange) strkes your nose. Hazy mahogany colour with big lumps of yeast. However, the beer is a bit too thin to balance the humongous hop flavour. Tasted with a fine cheddar (clos du Clocher) which was a good match, but divorce was imminent, as the cheese brought about too much of the bitterness, almost to a metallic level.

I'm not a big fan of pumpkin ales, but this one is nice - cloudy orange with decent white lacing - heavy nutmeg aroma - flavor has more of the same, but with a heaping helping of bready, biscuty flavors (it kind of tastes like liquid gingerbread), which balances out well with the pumpkin aspect of the beer - hops creep their way in in the finish, adding a new dimension - a very good fall beer.

Rich, vibrant blood orange colour. Rich malty nose (brown sugar, peaches, biscuits, stroop). Thick body showing alcohol (stronger than the 7% indicated), peaches, oranges, and loads of earthy, sticky malt like sponge toffee. Sweet finish.

[Rerate nearly nine years after last having this beer - lots of alcohol in the nose - fairly boozy, with some abrasive roastiness and a high acidity - some good stuff, but my how my tastes have changed] Tastes like a higher alcohol version of their robust porter, which is fine with me, cuz I likes me that robust porter - hoppy coffee, alcohol, chocolate milk - slightly light in body for an imperial, but quite good none-the-less.

Hazy bronze colour a very nice off-white head. Aroma of pumpkin, spice and everything nice - The best aroma i've gotten from a pumpkin! Medium to Light-Bodied; Strong spice/pumpkiny flavour with a residual sweetness. Aftertaste shows a great malt balance and a nice level of spiceyness! Overall, a very good beer, the best i've had of the type! I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 3-October-2003.

Not much to remark on- the body was an interesting amber hue with a very slight head. Aroma was light and floral. Flavor was floral, slightly bitter, and balanced by light malty tones. Undistinguished.

Dark red/brown body, with a thin white head. Aroma is slightly nutty and sweet. Flavor becomes more interesting as the beer warms, and is characterized by toasty, sweet malts. Borders on the "twig and berry" tastes common to Scottish Ales. Medium body.

Light golden colour with almost no head. Definately not hazy, and thus most likely an unfiltered wheat. Some bananas and yeast in the aroma, actually fairly nice. Lemony in the taste along with the medium-bodied yeastieness. Not much in the aftertaste, a bit of drying, but fairly mild. Nothing too special about this one, but nothing outlandishly bad either. Just a spot on hefe. Worth trying if you can find it, but if you can find other Smutty's, pick up the Big A, Portsmouth Lager or Robust Porter instead. I bought this 12 ounce bottle at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York.

Dark dark brown colour with a nice light brown head. Roasted malt smell with a slight aroma of grapes. Flat taste, even with noticable head. Bittering tastes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. The aftertaste is very bittering and a bit hoppy. A good porter, but I don't think it ranks up there with the best. I bought this 12 ounce bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.
