Description
It all started with a neighbor sharing a homemade beer. Liz saw how excited Jamil was and bought him a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas. Jamil became obsessed with brewing the perfect beer and became a homebrew legend in the process by winning a first-place medal in every known beer, mead, and cider style category. Eventually, his passion to brew was too strong and Jamil and Liz decided to take the plunge and open Heretic Brewing Company.

We started by sharing a building with another brewery in 2011, but we always brewed our beer ourselves. Within the first six months we realized there wasn’t enough space for two breweries in one building, so we began the search for a new place. By 2013, we had built a new, modern brewery in the wonderful city of Fairfield, California and moved all our operations there, including our new distillery.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is sort of chocolate and malt. Near full bodied. Flavor is like dark milk chocolate, with some coffee, and a sort of sour mash burnt malt touch. The sour aspect seems to leave with time, and the coffee comes out more. Finishing dry and a bit earthy (heh heh).

Tap at the Rubicon. Pours hazy amber gold - with a creamy beige head you can draw pictures in - and it laced too. Med body at least. Aroma is stone fruit and citrus. Flavor is yeast/spice, peach/apricot/orange, a oak note, and just the least, possibly imaginary, sour intrusion. Between the oak and that sour I can also imagine a light brett. Probably not tho. Heat is no issue here, and this is arguably a complex ale.

Pittsburgh California? Really?? Aroma of pine. Taste is strong pine resin. Straightforward stuff. Not bad.

On tap at City Beer. Pours with a near black body with a lasting, foamy, tan head. Aromas are roasty, floral, hoppy, and spicy. Bready and chocolate malt notes last as well. Flavors are bready, chocolate, medium dry, caramel, and spicy. Minimal to barely medium bitterness but what seems like a decently spicy hoppy aroma and flavor profile. Lively bubbles, dry, very mild alcohol (well hidden even), and pretty smooth.

On tap at City Beer. Pours with a lightly hazed golden body with a white head that lasts. Aromas show a lot of phenol, spicy, earthy and estery. Mild candy sugar and vanilla. Flavors are lightly tart, fruity, dried apricot, white wine, tangerine and floral alcohol. Dry and floral through the finish. Mildly warming, very, very mild barrel character with fuller carbonation. Decently solid BGSA.

Tap at the Rubicon. Pours clear copper. Aroma seems fruit, citrus and pine. Med body. Flavor is a mix of hops and something unusual reminding me of burnt rubber. Finishes bitter. Somehow the odd flavor is working rather well.

Tap at the Rubicon. Pours darkly garnet with a creamy beige head. Light citrus aroma. Near med body. Flavor is roast malt with some medium dark fruit and enough hop to keep the malt pretty much under control. Main flavor is roast malt, but it’s smooth, not harsh. It end’s more bitter than not.
