Bottle. Almost black. Malt, caramel, roast and a hint of laurel in the aroma. Malty sweet caramelly flavor with roast and laurel. Well balanced. Shyish RIS.

Belgian honey beer the classic way, commissioned by a 'horeca' business in Zelzate. Bottle from De Hopduvel in Ghent. Medium thick, tightly paper-lacing, off-white, dense but gradually dissipating head over an initially clear, warm and 'metallic' orange-hued golden beer, turning misty and deeper peachy with sediment. Somewhat 'understated' aroma of soggy old bread crust, old potatoes, wet paprika powder, soda, dried apple peel, straw, some DMS, rain falling on hot stones, vague touches of hot ironed cloth and toasted grains. Cleanish onset, thin red apple and some apricot, restrained in sweetness, lively carbonated without becoming too harsh, but still with lots of minerally effects reminiscent of sparkling water; slick, slightly metallic, (too) smooth cerealliness in the middle, very light bread crust accent, floral finish with some rather leafy, grassy, lingering hop bitterness, very light phenolic accents and something resinous which probably reflects traces of the honey, yet completely fermented out without any sign of sweetness either in nose or mouth. Ends dry, bitter, very minerally (hot stones submerged in water again) and a tad 'cooked'. Easily drinkable and quenching because of its dry character, but lacking in the delicate flowery aromas I expect from a honey beer, instead exhibiting that dreadful DMS; a bit on the thin and metallic side as well. Broers is kind of a hit or miss brewery and this clearly isn't a big hit...

Medium strength (traditionally speaking) stout with coffee from this industrious microbrewery in Wachtebeke near Ghent, bottle from De Hopduvel. Medium thick, regularly shaped, creamy, pale yellowish beige, stable head only very slowly showing gaps here and there; very dark chocolate brown robe, as good as black, with hazy mahogany-ochre edges. Aroma of black 'fondant' chocolate soaked in water, sourish damp tree leaves on a forest floor, old wrinkled apple, moldy nut shells, raisins, mud, caramel candy, old sweat, nutmeg, wet leather. Sweetish onset but restrainedly so, deep sourishness underlying and being quite obvious - if not obnoxious, a dull and damp kind of sourness like sweaty leather; notes of old raisins, dried blackberries, dried apple peel and unripe pear on top, medium carbonated, slick and notably soapy mouthfeel, congruent with what one would expect from a stout of this strength. Diluted milk chocolate mingles with nut shell maltiness, soggy toast-bitterish but sweetish in its core; feels a tad 'dirty' and 'muddy' in the end, with a very earthy 'old coffee grounds' effect, as in coffee that has been standing out in open air for a few days. Spicy-leafy-earthy hop notes and nutmeg-like phenols are added with the first lending a soft background bitterness to the whole, but it is still that underlying sourishness which keeps bothering me a bit - granted, any stout has a basic sourishness to it, but here it feels as if the 'dark maltiness' is a bit too thin to counter it. Ends a bit 'dirty' but still with a coffee grounds-spiciness (more than aromatic coffee qualities). Quite alright, in all, bit dirty and thin, but Broers are basically on the right track here, just needs more 'oomph' and more finetuning of the different ingredients. More or less what I was expecting, based on previous experiences with this brewery.
