Take a Hike!®

Inspired by the 273-mile hiking trail that traverses through the Green Mountains, Long Trail Brewing Company has been a caretaker of Vermont craft since 1989. Moved and motivated by the local culture and surroundings, we work hard to create beers worthy of our Vermont roots. From small batch recipes developed in our farmhouse-turned-pilot-brewery to wider ranging staples like our flagship Long Trail Ale and freshly formulated Trail Hopper IPA, our brewers are committed to crafting a trail-worthy family of beers.

Orange browna ale with small off white head. Rather grassy aroma and fresh malts. Light crisp with a nice sweet malt finish , a touch of roasted. Medium to light bodied, perfect for after hitting the trail, or like me, from a bike ride in the sweltering sun.

Rich amber colour with a nice dense off-white head. Aroma of piney hops, pumpkin pie spice, canella, malt and very strong nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong spicey flavour with a flavourful nuttiness and a rich malt background. The hop taste is very mild and teh sweetness is almost non-existant. A bit subtle and subdued in the aftertaste, but overall a fairly good beer-I don't agree with the style though, this one is more a Brown Ale or Alt than a Scotch. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 12-December-2003.

Dark copper in colour with a very thin white head. Decent aroma, predominant maltiness with a slight nutty scent along with a minimal sweetness. Medium to Light-bodied; Strong maltiness with prolonged bittering characteristics and slight spiceyness. Aftertaste shows some spice character as well as that strong maltiness which lives through the entire aftertaste. Overall, a good beer, not great...but definately better than the lackluster beers I'm accustomed to from this brewery. I owe a large deal of thanks to Jah_noth for letting me sample this twelve ounce bottle in a local trade. Cheers Dan!

Copper colour with a fantastic off-white coloured head. Fragrant aroma, figs and pit fruits really come out, and if you were blindfolded, you could easily say this is a barley wine by the nose. The malt is definately more powerful than the hops, but thats fine given the style. Medium-bodied; Silky smooth mouthful; Strong flavours, malt predominant and some of the sweetness and spiceyness comes out towards the end. Aftertaste bittered from the hops and actually semi-spiced from the kick in the flavours. Overll, a good beer...by far the best from the brewery that i've had. Definately worth picking up if you can find it. I got this twelve ounce bottle from an in-person trade with jah_noth...thanks again Dan!

A nice shade of amber on the pour with a very dense slightly off-white head. A scent of some hops with a good amount of malt makes for a great smelling beer. The taste is a bit weak, with no complexity at all. Straight-forward taste with some decent characteristics, but nothing special. This one was better than the Blackberry Wheat and on the same level as the 'Hit the Trail Ale'. Still not a brewery you would want to search out. And if you have the option of breweries in the upper-northwest, do not go with them, find better breweries such as Allagash and Smuttynose.

A very thin looking, barely golden colour with a fluffy white head. A bunch of large bubbles rising from the bottom are very noticable as this is lighter than any other pilsner i've had. There are no signs of cloudyness/hazyness to characterise its 'wheatiness', but i'll assume wheat was used in its production. The smell is actually pretty nice, a sweet very ripe blackberry is the single characteristic, but its very pleasant, especially for a summer evening. The taste was pretty watery with a slight blackberry taste, but definately a balanced beer of little to no hops and little to no malt. Really not one to look forward to. This is the second by the brewery that I've had, and I have one currently left in my place...and I will buy no more from this brewery. I've learned my lesson, and this is definately not the brewery to go for.

Nice amber colour with a slightly off-white head which starts nice, but fades with time. Smells of hops, malt and roasted barley dominate the smell...but there is some slight sugar and sweetness in the smell. The taste is a combination of all the flavours detected in the aroma, but at a more subtle level. The second tastes leaves even more to be desired, and shows the watery characteristics in the beer. The consistency of the beer is actually medium-bodied, but I would classify the taste as 'light-bodied' :-). I have two other beers by this brewery in my possession, but by the scores...they should be even worse than this beer...and i'm not really looking forward to that. Not a bad beer, but not a great one...I wouldn't reccomend buying this beer. I purchased this as a 12 ounce bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Amber ale with a caramelly accent. I have to say, after Double Bag, I really don't want these guys to shoot for smooth.

A very interesting and unique beer. A German style Stickebier (secret beer) which means its an alt that is not advertised as being available, and thus only regular customers who visit the brewpub would know about it (however, now that its bottled, its not exactly a secret anymore). This beer is also a great example of matching the right glass to the beer. I first had this in a wide mouthed glass, and I was hit full force by overpowering aromatics and strong alcoholic and malty sweetness, with weird bubblegum and nutty overtones. However, when I switched to a heavy straight walled, oversized German mug, this became a pure pleasure. Still sweet, it was restrained with nutty and caramel notes permeating the aroma and flavor. Smooth bordering on heavy body. Large creamy head - caramel brown color. This sort of beer is a true rarity among US brewers.
