Description
Crooked Stave Brewing Company is an artisan microbrewery in Denver, Colorado. It was founded by beer lover and beer brewer Chad Yakobson. The establishment of Crooked Stave was the result of Chad’s years of travel and studies about beer brewing abroad. His study of Master of Science in Brewing and Distilling at a university in Scotland gave him the expertise to set up his own brewery. Crooked Stave brewery is known for their brewing specialty in Brettanomyces fermentations and barrel-aged sour and wild ales. Crooked Stave Brewing Company is home to some of the finest sour beers. Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: glossy to clear yellow color with a finger and a quarter of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: peachy tart and sour character; some sweet to tart grains, sweet to tart oak; sour-ish Brett, brisk lemon whiff, lighter note of apricot; some funky character
Flavor: wraps up the prior noted aromas to a fine sour to tart and funky-ish Bretty citrusy to peachy quality; finishes the same way
Texture: medium bodied, leaning towards being a sipper; subtle smoothness but also an ample amount of sour assertiveness
Overall: a very nicely done peach sour ale I would definitely return to.

Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: golden pale yellow to almost copper colored haziness with a two and a half fingers of white foamy head which was a bit rocky in it's look and then dissipated nicely to leave some light messy lace
Aroma: sour/Brett to sweet oak with a touch of sour, then mixed citrusy character with tart orangey accents
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a fine sour to sweet to tart arrangement with a nice finish of the oaky tart and to sour and then some oranges
Texture: light to medium bodied - maybe a touch closer to medium, leaning towards being a sipper as some sour/tart aspects seem to get a little punchy with the tongue
Overall: I say a very nicely done sour/wild ale with oranges I would welcome again most likely in the Summer.

Can to becher glass.
Appearance: yellow to orange color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: apricot to grapefruity to lime hop notes up front with a subtle lime zest popping in there; light clean sweet cracker malts
Flavor: bittersweet through the prior noted aromas with a touch of juiciness but also a light zesty pop; finishes with the apricots, grapefruit and lime zest
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; some smoothness but also some hop bitterness assertiveness
Overall: nice enough as a West coast styled IPA, I could come back to this.

Can to tulip.
Appearance: milky yellow hazy color with a finger and a half of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: mixed raspberries up front then some watermelon and other melon hop notes; light clean malts
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a semi-sharp to bittersweet quality; finishes melon to raspberry toned with a touch of lemon sliding in underneath
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; some smoothness but also some light powdery dry hop spice which more or less just seems noticeable and not really offensive
Overall: for the most part, it's a nice enough NEIPA I could return to.

Can to lager glass.
Appearance: brassy yellow color with a two finger white foamy head which slid off nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: some lemony hops with light grassy to straw-like whiffs and a biscuity malt backbone
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet malty quality; finishes the same way
Texture: light bodied, sessionable; smooth along the tongue, no hop bitterness
Overall: I can see it as a German pilsener I think I could come back to.

375ml bottle - labeled at 12.5 abv and says aged in whiskey barrels, so maybe this is the Leopold bros. one? Anyway, pours a deep burgundy with a foamy, quickly diminishing head - a little oak and cherry in the nose, smelling deeply of red wine - more sour than other iterations of this beer, but that rich malt backbone is still there - warming alcohol and rich oak - cherry is quite prominent and combines with oak and dark malt for a very vinous character - light smoke and leather - reminds me of a sour version of Hair of the Dog Cherry Adam from the Wood, which is high praise.

375 ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a small brown head that soon dissipates. The aroma is quite strong with whiskey, oak barrel and vanilla. The taste mirrors the aroma, lots of whiskey, vanilla and caramel. The palate is full and oily. Finishes long and semi-sweet with lingering caramel. Overall: decent--big beer.

Bottle pour at the DCBeer December 2025 share. Poured a mostly clear ruby color with a very small white head, very small, wispy. Aroma was lots of acidic cherry skins, big acid. Vinous, big sour cherries.

Can.

A- Yellow color, clear liquid, white head.

A- Weak, grains, lime.

F- Lime, cucumber, tangy, grains.

T- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly tangy finish.

O- Not great. For Crooked Stave I expected more. This was light in aroma and flavor. Just some plain lime juice and cucumber skin flavors. Actually got better as it warmed. Meh.
