Description
Crooked Stave Brewing Company is an artisan microbrewery in Denver, Colorado. It was founded by beer lover and beer brewer Chad Yakobson. The establishment of Crooked Stave was the result of Chad’s years of travel and studies about beer brewing abroad. His study of Master of Science in Brewing and Distilling at a university in Scotland gave him the expertise to set up his own brewery. Crooked Stave brewery is known for their brewing specialty in Brettanomyces fermentations and barrel-aged sour and wild ales. Crooked Stave Brewing Company is home to some of the finest sour beers. Bottle, 75cl. It pours a semi-clear body, red in color, with a brownish tint. Off-white head. Fruity-sour nose with berries like cherry blending in. Cherry pits maybe. Some funky notes and a touch of puke. Tart and medium bodied, pleasant carbonation. The aroma isn’t wonderful, but the flavor is a tad better, the berries more present, and less cherry-ish. Lasting sourness and berry finish. A nice one, but nothing extraordinary going on. 121109

750ML acquired in a trade. Enjoyed in an HFS tulip at 60F.

A - Bronze gueuze like color. High clarity, no clouds and no head at all.

S - Lots of lemon, honey, hay and horsey funk. Hint of acidic vinegar.

T - Wow. I’m mixed on this one. At first, the cider vinegar is really disappointing. The middle has this explosion of CO2 which brings out lemony sweet funk. The finish is wood, caramel candies and tartness.

M - Light body, medium carbonation

O - This still has too much vinegar for my choice. It’s drinkable but no Lambic.

Tap at the barrel cellar - cloudy gold - frothy head - nose has a nice mix of mild spice (nutmeg, all spice), earthy squash (pumpkin, butternut) and earthy yeast funk - all are mild but well-integrated - soft carbonation - full mouthfeel - flavor is much like the aroma - very nice integration of spices, earthy squash, and mild funkiness - I really enjoyed this - when Chad nails it, he really nails it - too bad beers like this are few and far between.

Tap at the Barrel Cellar - turbid orange - huge, frothy head - sadly, it has that mildew and moldy peach skin note in the aroma that was so present in the Surette Reserva - however, it also has some tropical notes and musky Brett character - soft carbonation - creamy mouthfeel - medium sweet tropical fruit notes - some straw/hay - musky/earthy funk on the tail end - sadly, some strong, bitter wood and mild butyric acid are also present - the worst qualities of both beers are showcased here - too bad.

Tap @ Crooked Stave. Pours a cloudy yellow orange appearance with a fairly small white head. Pineapple, a bit bretty, vanilla, light grape, lemon, slightly tart aroma. Somewhat refreshing, lemon citrusy, pineapple, light tropical fruity, straw flavor. Not nearly as much as tartness as Surette Reserva, so I imagine it’s a fairly small part of the blend.

Tap @ Crooked Stave. Pours a hazy yellow golden appearance with not much head. Very passionfruit forward to the point you get a bit of cat piss, in addition to some pineapple and spice. Flavor is a little better with notes of pepper, lemon, passionfruit, and a slight tanginess. One of my least favorites from CS.
