Description
Crooked Stave Brewing Company is an artisan microbrewery in Denver, Colorado. It was founded by beer lover and beer brewer Chad Yakobson. The establishment of Crooked Stave was the result of Chad’s years of travel and studies about beer brewing abroad. His study of Master of Science in Brewing and Distilling at a university in Scotland gave him the expertise to set up his own brewery. Crooked Stave brewery is known for their brewing specialty in Brettanomyces fermentations and barrel-aged sour and wild ales. Crooked Stave Brewing Company is home to some of the finest sour beers. Some of its remarkable beers are the Crooked Stave Surette, Crooked Stave Vieille and Crooked Stave St. Bretta.

The ChrisO small midweek tasting. Hazy dark pink beer with a good pink head! Palate is light, dry and crisp. Strong raspberry sourness with sharp minerals. Can’t really taste anything else. Okay - bit sharp.

Tap at the Barrel Cellar - I am not a fan of the regular Surette Reserva at all, so this one really surprised me - the blending of the kombucha really smooths out the rough edges and eliminates the more unpleasant aspects of the beer - the aroma, especially, is much improved - the tea adds a soft herbal note and a light sweetness that balances the mild funkiness and earthy notes - the flavor is moderately acidic, as opposed to the more in-your-face acidity of the original - light sweetness, mild grape character - like the aroma, the tea adds a light herbal note - interesting and pretty tasty.

750 ml bottle purchased at Joy in Denver, Colorado. The pour is a clear golden, with a lot of carbonation bubbles, and a noisy fizzy one inch white head that crackles down quickly. I served this in my Lindeman’s footed flute type glass, and it looked quite a bit like Champagne. The aroma is apple cider, light acetic sour, and a general earthiness. As it warms, woodiness surfaces, along with a bit of urinal cake. The taste is cidery tart initially, the more lemon citrus sour, then a bit of the barrel and funk dirtiness. All the flavors are pleasant enough. The palate is light bodied, approaching wateriness. Despite the initial bubbles, the carbonation seems quite low. The finish is clean, a touch watery. Body picks up some as it hits room temperature. Overall, an easy to drink thirst quenching beer.

750 ml bottle shared by Ted. The pour is a hazed reddish brown with a smallish tan head. The aroma is raspberry fruit, light vanilla sweetness, and a tart funkiness. There is a brief hint of acetic vinegar, though it is quite subdued. The taste shows a nice balance of funk and raspberry fruit tart sweetness. There is a softness to the funk tartness that works well with the fruit. Palate is medium to light bodied, active carbonation, and a dry funky finish. Fun beer, thanks for sharing Ted.

Bottle at Crooked Stave shared with Thirdeye11. Pours a cloudy orange color with a large white head. A huge nose of hay and fruity hops. The flavor is awesome: sharp and dusty Brett, hay, light fruity hops mix in with the dusty dry flavors, some sweet candy struggles through. Very big flavors with a perfect soft palate. Awesome. This is dead on delicious.

Drank at the brewery. Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a medium white head. A big nose of sour fruit and wood. The flavor isn’t massive blueberries, but more sweet fruit that isn’t easy to distinguish without knowing, very soft palate, some oak, light funky dry brett. Very nice. Vanilla as well.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a bright but cloudy orange color with a medium white head. A big nose of white wine and mellow dusty fruit. Slight sour as are most of Crooked Stave’s beers, light funky Brett, big sweet Chardonnay, dusty oak. Quite nice, soft palate and big flavors.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy yellow color with a large white head. A big melon nose with some spices. The flavor is slightly sour, lots of melons, kombucha comes though, mellow. Easy to drink, and very cool.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a deep brown color with a small white head. The aroma is big sour brett and bourbon. A big flavor with cherries, sweet malts, dusty, big bourbon, some warmth. Good. Actually, it ends up pretty mellow.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy yellow with a tiny head. A big sour woody nose. A peppery flavor with sour wood, lemons, huge grapes. A bit like a big berliner. Quite soft and drinkable.
