Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

0.25 l bottle from 'Drankgigant.nl', best before October 2024. A bit hazy, golden amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Extremely sweetish, fruity and artificial aroma of peach, sherbet powder and some gummy bear. Heavily sweet, slightly bitter, minimally sourish, quite fruity and quite artificial taste of peach, gummy bear and sherbet powder, followed by a short, slightly bitter, a little tart finish. Thin body, minimally astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Drinkable but way too sweet.

March 2016: 330 ml bottle, from the Norwegian importer (I could swear I had rated this beer before, but apparently not). Dark reddish brown colour, large beige head. The aroma has first a whiff of smoke, then notes of red wine, red wine vinegar, oak and horse stable. Pleasant flavour, malty, fruity and only moderately sour, again notes of red wine, red wine vinegar and oak, hardly any noticeable hops. Still easy drinking, due to the fruitiness. The alcohol is well hidden. Nice one.

Bottle @ home. Sampled a few times both cold and hot (70 degrees Celsius). Last sample as hot is valid for this rating. Clear, deep red body without any head. Aroma has acidic cherry, dry fruit, cinnamon, cloves and classic glühwein. Taste is quite sweet with some balancing acidity, cherry, dry fruit, glühwein spices and some alcohol. Balanced body and long lasting aftertaste. Nice and fun alternative glühwein. Not easy to compare with anything else, but that’s not important – this is nice.
