33cl bottle from Beer52.com. An opaque, peaty black colour with no head, but moderate carbonation; aroma of chocolate malt and some mild smoke; quite lively on the tongue with a bitter taste and a thin, milky, chocolate malt body and some gentle smoke; then a unpleasantly salty aftertaste. I was expecting more body and some caramel to offset the salt, but sadly it’s not there - an interesting idea that doesn’t work for me.

Bottle from Ales by Mail, consumed at home. Murky light brown. Looks dishwater-esque. And pretty flat. Smells lovely though: fresh hazelnut with a light dusting of chocolate. Caramel and toffee. Tastes sweet and gooey. There’s a hoppy bite near the end - and a surprisingly bitter aftertaste - but my overall impression is sweet. Way, way too much alcohol in the finish. I get used to it after a while, and I have to remember that it’s not really a mind (well it’s not, is it?) and sip slowly. Enjoyable but the over-the-topness doesn’t do it any favours.

Bottle@yesprs - Black pour with tan head. Sweet malty aroma and taste, harsh roasted coffee, herbal hoppy action, some burnt notes, not getting on with this.
