This is a nice brewer but this was my first time trying this beer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a light golden color with a medium sized white head. There is a sweet, flowery hop aroma. The flavor is sharp with hops with a sour malt tang that turns dry on the finish. An unremarkable beer overall.

Cask version at Barley’s 4th Annual Mini RAF (05/13/06): Another year, another good Doppelbock from GLBC. Dark honey color with a thin light beige head that retains pretty well. Thin spotty lacing. Malty, nutty aroma with some dark fruit. Medium-bodied with a hoppy and nutty character, along with a good malt backbone. Some caramel and coffee in the background as well. The finish is sweet and malty. Enjoyable.

Cask version at Barley’s 3rd Annual Mini RAF (04/16/05): GLBC definitely came to play at this event. Dark honey color with a miniscule and foamy beige head. Aroma of malt and dark fruit. Medium body with a hoppy punch at first that rounds out quickly. Catching up with the initial hops blast are coffee, nut and malt flavors. The finish is lightly bitter and dry. A little more sweetness would help this beer, but overall there isn’t much to complain about.

Cask version at Barley’s 3rd Annual Mini RAF (04/16/05): Pours a murky orange color with a thin off-white head. Thin lacing too. Nice hoppy and citrusy aroma. Medium-bodied and very smooth with a subtle but persistent hops flavor. This reminded me very much of the DFH 90 Minute on tap, which is definitely a good thing. There are also some citrus and pine flavors. The finish is slick and rather bitter. All in all this was a great way to kick off the event, an Imperial IPA as good as I knew GLBC could do it.

I have been slowly going though the collection of beers from this brewer. This was my first tasting of this particular offering. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a copper color with a large fluffy tan head. The aroma was sweet, fruity and hoppy. The flavor is strong with sweet malt and has a strong fruity hop presence with a dry flowery hop finish. The hops really linger on the tongue.

Draft, at the Maple Tree Inn. Hmm... another Imperial that just begs to slide down your throat. A dark brown pour with a brown egg-colored head, and a rich malty smell. Has a rich black coffee taste, but no rough edges at all. It sits lightly on the tongue, sweet and mellow, with just enough bitter to make the ride worthwhile.

A hazy amber beer with a disappearing orange head. The aroma is sweet, very hoppy, with notes of caramel. The flavor is very sweet with notes of alcohol, caramel and a lovely bitter dry end.

On draught at the brewpub. Pours pitch black with a thick and frothy light tan head. Sticky rings of lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium-bodied and very creamy, with a nice roasted coffee character. Dark chocolate, malt and hops flavors are nicely balanced. The finish is dry and lightly hoppy. I have had 2 excellent Dry Stouts recently (Cadillac Mountain being the other) that have reminded me what a great beer style this can be. This is a keeper.

Thanks to Dough77 for this one! Black colour. Aroma has a lot of chocolate, light roast with some plum notes. It has a rich, deep, chocolatey character with burnt fruitcake roastiness that adds accent to the background. Rich, chewy and well-crafted. Finishes intensely with coffee, tons of malty sweetness and balancing alcohol.

Great Lakes usually provides exemplary models for the beers they create, and the fact that this brew is merely above average is kind of a letdown. Still, it’s pretty good. Deep ruby amber color with a medium beige head and thin lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and caramel. Medium-bodied and on the carbonated side, with flavors of sweet malt, light hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is clean and somewhat sweet. Overall pretty good, but I just know GLBC could knock this one out of the park if they really wanted to.

A hazy amber beer with a disappearing beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of ginger and cinnamon - and so is the flavor. A nice Christmas beer.
