Description
I have been commercially brewing now since November 2006 ( there is still only myself here !!! ) . Since my last update some interesting new beers have been produced , inspired by some of the fantastic beers I have tried not only from the UK but also from the rest of the World in particular the USA .

I have also tried some new ingredients in my beers one of which was a heavily peated whisky malt which came with a warning from the maltster " be careful it's very smoky !" . I added some to my Historic Porter recipe and it worked really well , every pub that had it asked for it again , one pub took 3 casks !

In 2023 Bowler's acquired the brand and recipes for Hopshackle Ales. Hopshackle’s multi-award winning real ales were produced from its brewery in Market Deeping. Upon his retirement, the previous owner wanted a ‘safe pair of hands’ to entrust the ales that had he had developed over the previous 17 years, and we are delighted to continue the Hopshackle legacy.

[Bottle from brewer’s own stand at the Chilterns Festival of Food, Great Missenden] Deep amber-brown. Sweet with hints of banana and honey. Flavours are weak considering the strength. A disappointment. Agree it should be a Belgian strong and not a tripel.

[Bottle from brewers own stand at the Chilterns Festival of Food, Great Missenden] Chestnut colour with a beige head. Despite being bottled, this actually had the mouthfeel of a good cask-conditioned ale, so well done on that. Good rich, smokey malt, a hint of ginger and earthy bitterness in the dry finish. Excellent stuff.

Was very kindly given a few bottles of the VC, VF and VB as trial beers July 2009 by Nigel (Mrhopshackle) and also some more in February 2010 when picking up some beer from Hopshackle. Pleased they have now been officially released. Rating taken from notes August 2009 when consumed with Craig (cgarvieuk) at Cropredy Festival and March 2010. Pours light amber this is really well balanced. nice sticky toffee from the outset, soft in the mouth and pleasant warmth from the alcohol, there is a good tang and the sweetness is well compensated for by the hoppy presence, in fact I like this more so than the Cascade version which surprised me. Cheers Nigel. A7 A4 F8 P4 Ov16 3.9

Pleased they have now been officially released. Rating taken from notes August 2009 when consumed with Craig (cgarvieuk) at Cropredy Festival and March 2010. Pours orange amber, this is a big IPA and at times veered towards barley wine territory but the hops were showing well here, although I did note that the aroma was slightly cheesy. Good warmth from the alcohol, and like Lea I noted a disctinct spicy/pepperiness, the hops showed well thoughout though with a good citrus sting noted, in fact looking back at my notes from Aug 2009 I suggest that the bitterness is a ripper, though it did rapidly subside, to leave a good hoppy tang. This beer demands respect and there is a lot going on with this. Very enjoyable beer, big thanks to Nigel. A7 A4 F8 P4 Ov15 3.8

Cask. Pours an almost clear deep amber golden with a rough off-white head. Very sweet aroma of peach and caramel. Quite full-bodied, flat, lots of peaches and sweet berries. Comes with a warming alcoholic finish. Excellent. 170110

Cask, gravity at Merton Winter Beer Festival 05-02-10 Pours very dark brown and as the description suggest there are pockets of rubyness glinting away when caught by the light of the window. Some sour maltyness in the mouth and an almost fizzy lactic sourness though it has to be said that this is quite restrained and not overdone. Nicely lipsmackingly tangy with some dark soured fruit juices starting to shine through, there is a bit of liquorice there as well. Really nice stuff. I wish I’d have had a little more time at the other side of the bar as ’Bobinlondon’ stood chatting merrily sipping on this and said it just seemed to get better and better, would have been nice to have had a bit more, though as it was I rather enjoyed this. Cask at Smithfield Hotel, Manchester. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and strong notes of fruit. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of fruits - especially peaches, but also a perfumy note.
