Echigo makes at least 3 stouts: An unfiltered bottled one at 6%, a filtered once in the can at 7%, both of which are called Echigo Stout, and this one, also filtered, at 7%. I’m not sure of the connection between the other two, but this one is definitely different. Black. The tan head quickly went to a few mm. Fruity, hoppy aroma, with roasted malts and nice American style hops. Woody, smoky, roasted flavor, with esters, hops, just a touch of cherries, coffee. Slightly sour. Light palate, crisp and refreshing. Interesting for a stout.

Bottle from Healthy Spirits in San Francisco. Near opaque brown color with a slight tan head. Sort of tinny dark roasted malt aroma. Flavor is strange spice/herb followed by dark roasted malt, then going back to a strong spice type statement. Never had anything like it. Under that is some coffee. Finish is refreshing and unusual. Very drinkable. Pleasant surprise. Almost like bay leaf or something similar.

Had from a Nitro-keg at Popeye’s. There seem to be many different versions of this beer: Unfiltered Bottle, Pasteurized Can, and Draught. Not sure they are all the same stout. The nitro keg version was smooth and lovely looking, full-flavored and displayed a good balance between roasted dryness and sweet malt. Had a touch of a port-like flavor as well. Very nice.

Golden, bright. A few bubbles. No head. The aroma is appley for the most part. Clean, vague malts and strawlike palate. Balanced but boring, save a handful of minor flaws.

Odd name for a beer. Another Echigo that is right down the middle of unremarkable. Deep amber color, full malt backbone with a touch of caramel and wood. A bit sour and sharp with a malty finish.

Dark brown with golden highlights. Sharp coffee roast in the aroma. Deep espresso roastiness on the palate. There’s some nuttiness but it’s mostly coffee. OK, but I would have liked more complexity.

Bottle. Golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma is weird, mothballs. Flavour is unpleasent, mothballs, malt, sweet, hop. Not my kind of beer.

Amber red color. Pale malts shine through, but unbalanced and hops are not as noticable as I would like. Mouth seems a bit one-dimensional of apples and oranges. Not bad, but not great. Gee.. from Echigo, what a shock!

Bottle, courtesy of beer_2000. Pours a nice, golden body with a small, beige to off-white head. Some micro-floaties. There’s a faint note of mothballs in the aroma, but that’s in the background. It is mostly malty, with beefstock and sweetness, as well as camphor and pine from the hops. Flavorwise it’s piney and citrusy from the hops, but also malty, and the mothballs plays a minor part here too. The body is too thin, and there’s a long, piney finish without being very bitter. A strange, nice beer. (071123)

Very floral, fruity, citrus aroma with banana, apple, and a dash of malt. Pours with a large white head that leaves in about 2 minutes. No lacing. Very sweet tasting Japanese beer, almost as if it had corn in it (which I doubt is the case). Dry palate with lively carbonation. Nothing to seek out.
