Cask at the Tokyo Real Ale Festival. Pretty red, glowing color. Nicely hoppy aroma, very earthy, as is the amber malt and hop flavor. Nice caramel and good balance. Decent flavor, though not all that special. Can: Starts with a very nice American hop nose, with red fruits and gumballs. The flavor cannot keep up with the nose, though. Maybe better than from the hand pump!

Big floral, apricot and strawberry nose. Little body. Lots of hops. Dry, mildly bitter finish. Not a red ale at all and not exciting, but not bad.

Deep, clear red with a tan head. Very malty and bready aroma. Flavor is heavy on the malt with some earth and dough. Too much bread malt for my liking, but it’s not a bad beer, really. Can.

Golden. Not much head. Malty, somewhat toasty nose like a nice helles. Tastes like one, too, with slightly doughy, fat malts on the tongue. Maybe some late herbal dryness. Not pils, but otherwise good.

Golden but with no head and some large bubbles. The aroma has a toasty, biscuity character. A more watery body has still a somewhat biscuity accent and only a shade of herbal hop.

Cask at the Tokyo Real Ale Festival, 2009. Strong American hop nose, earthy amber malts, earthy and dry. Decent hopping. OK. Not fabulous, but really dry. Rather watery and thin compared to others. Decent balance, but malt not very interesting.

Canned at RBJG park session. Near black, small beige head. Rich cocoa aroma. Mid-sweet with clean rounded mouthfeel. Really drinkable despite crystal malt and plenty of cocoa powder bitterness.

Draught at Eni-bru, Osaka. Claer dark brown, small head. Molassess and caramel abound. Sweetish and clean. The roasty malt flavours go missing amongst sweet fudge. Low bitterness. Not for me.
