About

Generation.

Dull tan. Quite murky - there are actually yeast strata in this. Very yeasty aroma almost goes in a barnyard direction with its woody accent and orchard fruity elements (peach, pear). Quite fizzy, even for a weissbier. Yeasty palate with hints of apple. Yeasty-dry finish. No smoke!

Bright amber-brown with a thick, rocky head. Lightly smoked aroma with caramel, toffee malts. Fairly full body. Sweet Munich malts and a light smokey accent. Soft finish with a light woody dryness. I greatly prefer this to the regular smoked lager and wish this came from the barrel instead (esp at the Keller).

Hazy dull straw. Thick white foam. Fresh, straw taste with a herbal bitterness. This has a more delicate character than most of the style and a dry finish. That said, it is a highly enjoyable brew. Spezial U has grown on me over the course of repeated tastings. Where it lacks the strong mineral character of many other Franconian country(style) brews, it certainly lacks not for a nice hop aroma and a very moreish finish. It is actually becoming my go-to beer at Spezial.

500 mL bottle from Bruisin Ales in Asheville. Why did I buy this? Pours a clear ruddy red color with a medium frothy white head. Aroma is sweet, grainy malts with caramel, peat and lignt smoke. Taste is sweet grainy malts, tea, toffee and very light smoke. Reminds me strongly of the Russian baltic porters from Baltika and the like. Medium-full bodied. As someone who dislikes smoked beers, this is tolerable.

Cask at In de Wildeman. Clear copper amber colour, thin head. Aroma of light smoke, caramel, toasted malts. Flavour is lightsweet, malty, a little smoke, stale metallic hoppiness, light bitter finish. Bottled version didn’t have the stale hops, and was thus more enjoyable. Easy drinking rauchbier.

On tap at In de Wildeman. Dark reddish brown colour, thick creamy beige head. Aroma of ryebread, caramel, a hint of smoke, some molasses. Flavour is rather sweet, rye, caramel, molasses, very malty, and a soft subtle smoke flavour. Light bitter finish. Medium bodied, syrupy texture. Smooth and easy drinking. Nice one!

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden deep amber to hazzlenut brown with a dense, creamy and orange to tan head. Mild leathery smoked initial aroma. Slight tarish following this. Mild and sweet caramel malt base with a light leathery smoked note on top. Smooth smoked from back of the nose too. Lasting mild smoked impression into the far finish.
