Re-rating (previous 6.2) Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 26B/28A, adapted). Bottle 33 cl - Batch unknown (bottled on 08/08/2018 - BBF 08/08/2023). AROMA: medium soft brettanomicyes notes of barn, with a medium-low note of fruitiness (orange-like). faint sweet malty background. APPEARANCE: dark orange color and clear. large ivory head with average retention. TASTE: initial medium-low brett notes (stable), slight fruitiness (oranges) with a faint sweet malt background. medium-high bitterness with a dry and bitter finish. PALATE: medium-low to low body with high carbonation. OVERALL: a trappist ale with a special yeast blend giving it a unique aroma and flavour. this sample had 2 years in the bottle, rendering it a bit drier but more soft overall.

0,33 l bottle from FIRMA BIER. Hopefully it is not just a fake with the label being removed from the regular one. Minimally hazy, golden amber with a huge, foamy, very slowly diminishing, white head. Funky aroma of lemon, fermented apples, white grapes and a bit of gooseberry. Weak, sourish taste of lemon, fermented apples, white grapes and gooseberry. Short, dry and a little watery finish with slight hop bitterness and a bit of iron as well. Thin body and a bit watery, fizzy mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Not easily distinguishable from the regular Orval if you do not compare them at the same time. But to be honest, this one is just a shadow if its older brother as it is quite weak in aroma and taste and nothing more than a nice thirst quencher. There is no need to drink it regularly and thus to distribute it outside the holy halls. And no, that bottle was not just a fake.

Bottle purchased from Kraddel at the bar he works at in Antwerp early 2014, consumed at home. Easter Monday 6th April 2015 Drinking this alongside a regular but very fresh standard Orval, looks wise they are startlingly similar, both are a hazy orange moving to brown with a slight glow and a handsome puffy, swiftly departing head. If I had of had this as a standalone Orval I have to confess that my suspicions may not have easily been aroused, it’s very similar in taste, it’s a great beer, but having the luxury to compare you realise it is a little thinner in the mouth, a little less sweet and not as malty (not that the original is that malty btw) I rather like this version, interestingly I’d had this before but never got round to rating it. Golden honey coloured. Very cloudy. Thick ivory head. Intense aromas of honey, orange, passion fruit, peach, yeast and cake. Much easier than its older sibling (Orval), less secondary than it. It actually smells like a mix between a regular Orval and an american IPA. Dry, pungent and sizzling. Fresh and bitterish. Medium-lasting. Nice, but not as interesting as Orval.

Aged 15 months prior to tasting (served at the À l’Ange gardien pub, Orval). Amber orange with greenish shades. Incredibly thick ivory head. After ageing for more than a year, the secondary aromas (still present, such as fermenting bread, yeast, yogurt, cider) yield way to fragrant white flowers. Noticeably sour, but never to the point of being unbalanced. Dry, bitterish, and long-lasting. The after-taste is reminiscent of bitter herbs. So different and so marvelous. When aged more than 10 years, as I had the privilege of tasting in Kulminator, Antwerp, the sheer acidity and secondary aromas yield to a perfect balance of almost all flavours except sweet and a predominant aroma of wild red berries and roses. Amazing.

0,33 l bottle from EDEKA Mohr, bottled on 18/2/2014 (so just over a year old). Clear, amber with a large, foamy, slowly diminishing, tan to white head. Lovely and intense aroma of white grapes, fermented apples, gooseberries and citrus with gentle but not unpleasant medicinal notes. Nice, sourish taste of fermented apples, citrus, white grapes and hints of candy sugar, followed by a long, medium bitter and very dry finish. Medium body, creamy and at the same time spritzy mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Very special but also very good. The acidity still leaves some space for a balancing fruitiness in the aroma and a gentle bitterness in the finish.

Bottle. Beautiful, orangebrown beer with a dense, big and beige head. Aroma has lots of green apples and sourness, some bananas, other fruits also, lether and earthyness. Taste is quite sour, green apples, spices, fruits, dry lether, strong herbs in the end. Medium bodied, strong and smooth carbonation. The great beer wtih lots of same notes as in the normal Orval. Complex and enjoyable, very tastefull.
