A little cloudy amber to copper coloured beer, white creamy solid head, adhesive. Aroma: hop bitters, slightly bretta sour and yeast. Taste: strong hop bitterness, a little tartness like green apples and a bready yeast note. Aftertaste: dry bitterness, still the slight tart note. MF: nice carbon, medium body. One of my favourites.

Note: so I finally got around to taking some notes for the trappists. I've been drinking them for years and usually when I did not felt like sampling something new and taking notes. Tasted them with 2 friends for a trappist review article in the student society magazine.

After seeing thread after thread about merits and downfalls of this beer I figured it was about time to try. However to counteract buildup in my head I decided to drink on very ho-hum tuesday while watching tv. Pours a drity copper color with huge soapy head that doesn’t go anywher anytime fast. Aroma is huge of wine, grapefruit sourness, yeasts, and lemongrass. taste is spicy, of green grapes, honey, more wine, cranberries, and more yeasts. Finish is dry and bitter and seems to last and last. Really great for such easily attainabale brew.

31st December 2005 Early amateur rating warning! Mid brown beer - lighter than the Chimay and Rocheforts this evening but really nothing special.
2010 note - one of the first beers I rated when I had no idea of it’s reputation, several thousand beers later - still struggling to understand the reverence it’s held in! 18th February 2015 Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. KEGS. A 2004 bottle shared by TDTM82. Cheers Tom! Light haze on this amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Touch of gueuzey wet wood, clear but mellow brett. Light semi dry finish. Not bad. 3.4. 2007 Bottle also courtesy of Tom - cheers mate! Almost clear amber beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth with good fine carbonation. Airy malts. Brief savoury note. Decent brett but not overpowering. Mild dried fruits, light floralness. Finishes crisp with a little carbonated sting. Much livelier than the 2004. 3.6

A 2006 bottle shared on GBBF Day 1. Hazy gold beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Palate is light and semi dry, still has decent fine carbonation. Ripe orange citrus. Mellow brett in good balance. Little floralness. Light semi dry finish. Decent 3.6

330 ml bottle from Systembolaget. Pours a big, white, foamy head and has a quite hazy, pale, orange appearance. The aroma is huge. There’s a lot of yeasty notes, sourness and some fruity hops . The taste is very special. Dry and sweet with a bitter ending and heavy acidity over the whole spectrum. Mouthfeel is dry with a lot of carbonation and a full body. Truly a well made, balanced beer. Really interesting stuff. Re-rating 2011-08-26. 33 cl bottle. Appearance as earlier. Quite bretty aroma with notes of mint, horseblanket, yeast, herbal/noble hops. Taste is quite dry, medium bitter and quite hoppy overall and a bit bretty. Medium bodied with quite high carbonation. Mm, balanced stuff. Re-rating 2012-06-22. 2006 vintage bottle at Mikkeller Bar. Clear, amber liquid with medium to big off-white head. Aroma is funky sour with notes of apples, barnyard, lemons, almonds and paint thinner. Taste is dry and light bitter with leathery, fruity funk. Medium bodied with low carbonation. The nice dry hops and fresh funk is gone. A lot worse than a 6-8 months old bottle. 4/6/6/3/15 => 3.4 Re-rating 2013-04-04 (5th annual Orval Appreciation day(s)). 9 months old bottle. Appearance as before, grade rests. Great head retention. Aroma is very fresh and complex with loads of elegant brett (barnyard, horseblanket and tropical fruit) along with some minty hops, apples and bready malt. Delightful to smell. Taste is dry and light to medium bitter with malty notes of bread and biscuit as well as some balanced funk. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Up aroma by one. 8/4/7/4/18 => 4.1

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a large head. On the nose, there’s yeast, bubblegum, banana and some hops. Orange on the taste to start, sweet with a dry, bitter finish. Not drunk something like this before!

Beautiful hazy burnt orange colour with a long lasting foamy off white head. Aroma is slightly funky with plenty of bready yeast. The sour funkiness comes out more in the flavour and you can really pick out the brett character. Very enjoyable. A nice gateway beer to lambics.

Bottled 29/04/09, $6 @ Binny’s. So here’s the second most-rated beer I haven’t had yet (#1 is Rochfort Trappistes 10.) No special occasion, just rating #1977, and that’s the year I turned 18 and could drink in Iowa. Pours a darker yellow with a thick, hilly yellowish head. Nice Belgian sweetness fills the air immediately. Taste has some nice drinkable qualities, but I can see how some people can’t take to it. Note quite as sweet as the nose, but showing a little dryness. Firm and tiny carbonation bubbles. A bit of spiciness that keeps this from being just another malty beer. Should really be experienced in a group, so everyone can contribute their impressions toward a consensus of what this is about.
