The tequila barrel aged variant in this series, commissioned by a whisky club in Bruges from Hoevebrouwers in Zottegem. Thanks to Craftmember for sharing. Frothy, large-bubbled, pale yellow-beige-ish, irregularly edged head on a deep chocolate brown beer with misty burgundy glow – but not really black as one expects from something with ‘imperial stout’ on the label. Aroma of toffee, vanilla-scenting oak wood, brown sugar, ripe banana, ground hazelnuts, ruby port, brownies, indeed a boozy and spicy whiff of tequila but subtle and not really recognizable as such, ripe pear, brown rum, vague hint of sweat and something very distantly solventy (varnish). Sweet onset, candi-sugary, fruity flavours of banana, red apple and raisin, moderately carbonated with medium thick body; layers of soft caramelly, brown-bready and toffeeish malt sweetness ensue, developing a toasty bitter edge but not evolving into actual roasted bitterness so caramelly sweetness remains the dominant factor in this respect. The finish adds gentle phenolic notes (clove), soft oak wood and warming alcohol, the latter initially quite ‘generic’ but only in the very end showing a subtle spiciness and pepperiness revealing that indeed tequila was involved here. Technically a well-made beer, enjoyable enough as such, but this is structurally much closer to a quadrupel than anything stout-like and the tequila (for once) could have been more outspoken for me; at least far less solventy than the whisky version I had a while ago and in that sense probably a bit more accessible.
