Description
Mission Brewery was originally established in 1913, but like most breweries of the time, it went out of business during the first year of Prohibition. In 2007, Dan Selis, an avid homebrewer, re-established the brand and has built it into one of the top craft breweries in San Diego County.

355 ml. bottle. BBF 05/2016. Finally Pirate themed beer. Typical (for the style) black with mocha head (which doesn’t last) beer. Nose is charcoal mixed with sweet mocha, light nuts, artificial chocolate, almost touch herbal mainly sweet candy mocha mixed with some light roasted malts & ashes. Taste is strongly powdery overly ashy, strong ashy roasted coffee, faintly herbal some mocha & cheap chocolate sweetness in the back, light roasted nuts, touch chestnuts. Body is a bit thin, roasted, touch ashy. Not bad at all as a beer but low on the totem pole for a RIS.

Bouteille 355ml.

Bottle, old notes from the Boise imperial stout tasting. Color is dark brown and a thin brown cap. The notice is noticeably sweet with bourbon, a little cocoa, and light with smoked malt. Body is a little on the thinner side, somewhat boozy. Sweet with minimal bitterness. Nice level of barrel aging, a little woody and a little smoky. Faint sour notes, seems like dark fruit and vinous. Overall it’s good, but I preferred the base beer.
