Description
Mission Brewery was originally established in 1913, but like most breweries of the time, it went out of business during the first year of Prohibition. In 2007, Dan Selis, an avid homebrewer, re-established the brand and has built it into one of the top craft breweries in San Diego County.

bottle - Pours very hazy orange with a huge head requiring a multi-part pour. It’s extremely bubbly. Smell of oxidation and band-aid with a disgusting taste to match. Yep, it’s infected. The ratings are good enough that I’m willing to give this beer another try if I get the chance and will change my rating at that time if appropriate, but I’m sick of infected beers and rating them as is. Quality control matters.

bottle - Pours a hazy straw color and has a grainy malt aroma. It tastes of sweet, bready malt with a bit of hops. It’s light bodied and drinkable but bland to me. It’s not really my thing.

Bottle at Vino Volo, LAX, last beer on this trip in the United Rates, 01/05/14. Very lightly hazed golden with a moderate off white covering that thins. Nose is bitter orange, light grapefruit, grassy, floral tones, tangerine, toasted malt. Taste comprises pine, tangerine, orange pith, grass, floral hops, peach tones. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close - clean and crisp as the curtain comes down. No hop bomb but a well balanced IPA with floral bitterness.

Bottle at home, from the Best Dam Beers Shop SD, 11/05/14. Pours clear golden amber with a well appointed off white covering that retains - picture book appearance! Nose is caramel malt, pine, bitter orange, bread dough, grapefruit. Taste picks up the pace a little, caramel malt, bitter grapefruit, juicy citric, light booze notes. pine resin. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close and a little warming alcohol. Solid enough DIPA, ticks the boxes, packs a punch.

22oz bottle all to myself while sitting on my daughters balcony overlooking Balboa Island: 16th March 2014. I thought this was a good beer from start to finish, golden, hoppy and just nice! The alcohol level suited the flavours and although hoppier than the UK beers I’m more used too, this didn’t try to kill my palate like some I tried while in California.

32 oz can - Pours mostly clear gold and has an aroma of cereal malts and some citrus. It has a light body with mild to moderate bitterness and a dry-ish finish. It’s easy to drink and fairly good.

bottle - Pours clear orange with a small, lingering head. It has a hop led aroma with citrus and resin. The flavor is resinous and very bitter. It’s full bodied and very good, though not great for a style that I love. Worth a try.
