WHAT'S AN UPSLOPE?
Meteorologically speaking, it’s a front range-covering, water-table-filling, snow-dumping weather pattern that anyone with bindings and a roof rack would die for. Beerologically speaking, it’s carbonated gold. In 2008, Matt Cutter, Henry Wood and Dany Page, kissed their homes in Cleveland, Atlanta and Argentina goodbye to bring their beer-brewing love affair to Boulder, Colorado. With that, Upslope Brewing Company was born. And after ten years of supplying Colorado with trailhead tallboys, and pow-day libations made from the freshest snowmelt, the finest hops and the purest passion for living life outdoors, one thing has become undeniable. These guys didn’t just float another microbrew into the sea of Colorado microbrews. They created a lineup of quality craft beer that tastes as good poured from a tap as they do pulled out of a fishing vest. In other words, for those who call the Continental Divide home, the perfect storm.

Shaker pint draft at the Highlands Alehouse in Aspen, Colorado. The pour is a clear golden with a one inch white head with a ton of carbonation bubbles. The aroma is malt grain with a bit of corn and not much else. The taste is typical American Lager, sweet grain malt. Clean though dull. The palate is light to medium bodied with active carbonation and a mostly clean finish. There is a bit of sweet corn in the aftertaste.

12oz can pours with a clear bright golden body that supports a white head. The aroma offers up malty sweet lemons and then earthy lime mixed with a pleasing yet faint doughy note. The taste hits the ‘refreshing’ button with crisp lemon enhanced grapefruit hops that have a modest sweet thin malt backbone. I also get a light bready sort of doughy note that surfaces about midway and pulls this thing together. Nice Pale Lager that stays fresh and crisp and it also stays far from being too sweet.

12oz can pours with a clear copper body that has thin gold edges and supports a nice looking tan head of foam. The aroma is inviting with spicy hops and pine hops that move into a mild citrus hop note plus a light mix of biscuit malts and sweet maltiness. The taste delivers a mix of sweet malts, pine hops and grapefruit to clementine citrus hoppiness. To midway the hop bitterness surges forward along with some spicy hops as well. There’s a modest sweet malt to crystal maltiness creating a nice base for the hops. Solid IPA.

12oz can pours with a mahogany colored body that has amber edges and supports a thin dark tan head of foam. The aroma offers up roasted malts, some earthy malts, a dash of chocolate and then faint dark fruity ester notes. The taste begins with a nice mix of sweet malts, earthy maltiness and some dark roasted malts. To midway a mild earthy wet tobacco and chocolate sensation join in and their addition fits smoothly into the overall flavor scheme. These notes proceed into the finish where a thin ribbon of sweet dark fruity esters murmurs to the surface. This all comes together very well and a good example of why I enjoy this style.

Location: 19.2 oz can (unique, never seen this size before) from Central Market, 2/24/14
Aroma: The nose is resin and pine, tropical notes, and a just a hint of rubbing alcohol
Appearance: It pours a clear gold-orange color with a thin white head and streaks of lace
Flavor: The taste is mildly sweet, mostly bitter, with some slightly off alcohol flavors as well
Palate: The body is medium-full, it is sticky and a touch hot, with a long, dry finish
Overall Impression: I have gotta say, I love that can. Very cool. As for the beer, I actually quite enjoyed the aroma (minus the hint of rubbing alcohol), but the flavor doesn't quite live up to the level of the aroma. This is a decent DIPA, it just happens to have flaws, and those flaws shine through more so than in other beers that are equally as (minimally) flawed. It's close.

12oz can pours with an amber to mahogany colored body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up roasted malts that have a dash of dark roasted malts and molasses added in as well as a pleasing earthy wet tobacco note. Nice. The taste is pretty darn rich for a brown with lots of roasted malts that approach being dark roasted and burnt malt. To midway a mild malty to molasses sweetness kicks in just as earthy wet cigar tobacco leaves make more of a grand entrance. Into the finish it ends earthy, roasty, with some sweetness and then a sting of malt blended pine like hop bitterness. Rich deep brown with lots going on and it all lines up very nicely. I like this.

Can shared with ash. Cheers! Pours clear brown, and smells brown too! Like a bag of brown malt. Sweet and nutty. Taste brings a touch of chocolate. Surprisingly old fashioned. Good.

Can from cthomas2390. Appearance - dark brown and opaque. Decent lace on the head. Nose - hazelnuts and sweet malt. Some roastiness. Taste - more of the same - chocolate coming through a bit on the taste. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly elegant finish. Overall - a good example of a brown ale.
