Description
Port City Brewing Company is an award-winning craft brewery and proud producer of an exciting line of hand-made, great quality, locally crafted beers. Its name comes from Alexandria's rich and colorful origins as an important colonial seaport and later, a major brewing center home to the largest brewery in the southern United States. Port City Brewing Company is proud to revive, celebrate, and continue this rich brewing tradition right outside of our Nation's Capital.

Single from Churchkey to go after arriving to a way too packed house. Low-ball back at the hotel. Bottled 7/31/24. Coal black body, sticky cookie dough head. Burnt caramel, touch of bitter cocoa, lightly herbal, premium beer nose. Taste is charred malt balls, soot, mellow lactose sweetness & a twinge of earthy, lingering bitterness on the tail. Frothy, slightly astringent, very base, easy abv. Okay to good. Felt a touch empty.
Revisited 9/6/25 outside of DC
Straight from the bottle rate with food in my hand.
Brown & boring.
Roasty, bittersweet, some upfront caramel, creamer, slight acid, nilka backbone.
Good structure, milky feels.
Okay. 3.2

Almost clear pale yellow colour, moderate sized dense ivory-like white head; aroma and taste of clove, some citrusy, banana and bready notes, maybe minimal coriander (but rather no coriander at all); well, it tastes and smells rathet like a german hefeweizen than a belgian witbier, but otherwise it is quite ok

Draft pour at the brewery. Poured a clear golden yellow color with a small white head. Aroma was tropical fruit candy, sweet, with a nice bitterness bite to it. Flavor was similar. Tasty stuff.

Draft pour at the brewery. Poured a dark ruby red color with a small white head. Aroma was big malt, sweet raisins, light bready dough. Flavor was molasses, grain, toffee, plums. I liked it, but I think this would be amazing with age on it - would love to have what they brewed in 2024 in years down the road.

Draft at the brewery. Poured a hazy yellow-orange color with a small white head. Aroma is clove, coriander and other spices, with a touch of pumpkin. Flavor was similar. I love Optimal Wit, but something just doesn't quite hit it out of the park here. Maybe coriander+ pumpkin pie isn't the flavor combination I'm really digging. It grew on me while I was drinking it, but I think I'd rather just have an Optimal Wit.

Sampled at the 2024 Battle of the Barrel Aged beers. So... the commercial description doesn't really tell the story. They wrote a description like Ernest Hemmingway but the glass is more Ernest Scared Stupid. But people love the Ernest movies. First off... Dipa base? So much barrel and caramel. Huge chestnut honey. Some whiskey but it feels more Irish than Kentucky. Full bodied with booze. Enveloping. 7 3 7 3 12 This isn't bad, its just a bit messy.
