Description

The inescapable tripel in this Gronckel series by Vrijstaat Vanmol, bottle from Huis van de Geuze (linked to the brewery by family ties). Thick and foamy, frothy, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, dense head towering over a misty peach blonde beer with old gold hue and lively sparkling. Aroma of ripe banana and even banana-flavoured bubblegum, kiwi, melon, sugar loaf, honey, peach 'jenever', orange juice, gin, a whiff of cilantro, ripe Doyenné pear, freshly whipped cream, white pepper, hint of wormwood. Spritzy, fruity onset, crisp carbonation with somewhat numbing effect so even for the style a tad overcarbonated, sweet fruitiness of peach, pear, melon and a lot of banana (isoamylacetate), full and bit 'fluffy' body, soft bready malts with slight caramelly edge and honeyish residual sugar on top, growing phenolic spiciness (clove) and a whiff of coriander near the end, right before a rather leafy hop bitter effect takes over, yet remaining mild enough to leave a lot of room for the malt sweetness; very 'jenever'-like alcohol aspect in the tail, becoming rather wry and obnoxious, accentuating the hop bitterness. Sweet-fruity nose contrasting with wry-alcoholic and hoppy bitterness: your typical Flemish tripel, aimed at the masses and in that sense not badly done at all, but this brewery has produced more memorable beers. The astringent booziness especially bothered me a bit, but I maintain that the nose is enjoyable if you think of sweet, ripe, yellow fruit. Certainly not the worst in this overexposed genre - and I use 'overexposed' lightly.

Pours a peachy, pink, fluorecent, medium sized pinkwhite head. Scent is DMS ( average level for a raw beer ) mild fruity touch. Taste is full, farily dry, acidic, mild DMS, medium fruityness. mild bitter touch. Herbal. Interesting, rather refreshing. Fairly easy drinkable. Dry finish, lingering fruity / herbal notes.

Bottle shared. Very lively hazy dull straw with white head. Oats, yeast, orange peel, lots of coriander, wheat, light cloves, lemon. Under medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with thick oat and wheat feel and a lot of carbonation. A bit meh and way too much carbonation.

Barrel aged and dry-hopped sour ale intended as a 'Viking' beer, created by Vanmol at Alvinne. Bottle ordered from the brewery. Medium thick, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, opening head leaving an irregular mousy ring and 'veils' in the middle; cloudy apricot blonde robe with pale orangey tinge. Aroma of overripe pear, mango chutney, wet oak wood, vague chicken soup touch, fresh basil leaf, melting butter, lemon thyme, fermenting apple juice, yoghurt, yellow raspberries, raw potatoes, sweat, cloves. Very estery, sweet-and-sour onset, breathing 'Alvinne' all the way through, offering impressions of mango chutney and ripe pear again, lots of yellow plum, gooseberry and rhubarb compote, medium carbonated with a creamy, bit buttery mouthfeel; white-bready core, sweetish but dried by mild yet consistent lactic tartness and fruity, plum- and grape-like effects, vibrant and pleasant, teaming up with herbal notes of basil, lemon vervain, lemongrass and thyme in the end. Soft tannic woodiness binds everything together without overpowering too much, while a lime-zesty effect from the dry-hopping elegantly mingles with the estery fruitiness, one never overruling the other too much. Alvinne style through and through, interesting and quite refined, but with that name on the label, it could hardly go wrong. Enjoyed this one, would happily revisit it. --- Beer merged from original tick of (collab with) Alvinne Nørse Man on 26 Dec 2020 at 14:24 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8.5.
