Description

Big quadrupel by the Vrijstaat Vanmol crew, made this big by working with an original gravity of 32° Plato, without any addition of sugar, much like e.g. German Doppelbocks are made – but with a very ‘Belgian’ element of added spicing. Mousy, tiny-bubbled, pale greyish beige, slowly opening head, misty chocolate brown robe with mahogany-brown hue. Aroma of toffee and caramel sauce, brown sugar even if not applied, ground hazelnuts, thyme, nutmeg, old dry leather, dried fig, almond, pear, kahlua, moist brown carton, vague hints of old cigarette shag, old tea bags and liquorice. Densely sweet onset, again very reminiscent of candi sugar even if it has not been used here (contrary to what is custom in Belgian quads), fruity hints of fig, medlar and banana, medium carbonated with unsurprisingly very full, rounded mouthfeel; dense caramelliness fills the mouth cavity, with aspects of brown honey, hazelnuts and candi syrup accompanying it, towards a long, warming and spicy finish hinting at nutmeg, thyme and pepper, while softer and sweeter dried fruit, brown bread (with a bittering toasty accent) and toffee impressions linger on. Ends with a rum-like alcohol effect, but the high density of this beer prevents it from becoming too obtrusive. Big, intense, sweet quadrupel, well done.

4/X/20 - 75cl bottle @ Norseman Launch Dinner at Villa Florazicht (Merelbeke), BB: n/a (2020-958)
Pretty clear orange blond beer, small irregular creamy white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very spicy, some cardamom, bit sourish, passion fruit, bit malty. MF: ok to lively carbon, medium body. Taste: very sourish start, passion fruits, bit malty, pretty bitter, grains, spicy touch. Aftertaste: more bitterness, fruity, mainly passion fruits, spicy touch, still pretty acidic.

Pours unclear yellow, small to no head. Smell is citrussy, tart, mild oak. Surprisingly mild on DMS (though present) . Taste is sharp, mild DMS, oaky, alvinne microflora are recognizable indeed. Medium mild tartness. Pineapple, bit to the thin side perhaps. medium carbo. Nice and unique for sure.

Draught Almost no head over fully hazy orangejuice-coloured beer. Sourish nose, but with sweet notes as if raspberries were involved, and even a dash of fresh orangejuice. Sharp-ish to sharp flavour, sour fruit. Hint at diary. No juniper, which surprises me. Citrus (again as orangejuice), and some yeastfeatures. Lipsmacking acidity, dry-out effect, light body, long-lasting flavours. Well worth all the trouble searching it. Great achievement.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a medium sized off white head. Lots of sediment in the glass. Nice lacing. Aromas of stoney fruits, apricots, tangerines, peaches with vinous, floral and grassy notes. Taste is again quite similar to the aroma and is quite spicy and peppery on the palate with a fairly dry finish. Medium bodied with a fairly smooth oily mouthfeel. Lasting stoney fruit and spicy finish. Not too sweet or too bitter it is nicely balanced. The taste is better than the aroma. Nice flavours. Good beer.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy yellow colour with a medium sized throthy white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is very hoppy and fruity with grapefruit, mango, lemon, lychee, tropical fruits, citrus peel and grassy. Taste is the same notes as the aroma with a pithy bitterness on the palate. Thin bodied, quite watery and high carbonation leaves a fizz on the tongue. Not bad for a beer of only 3.3% and it would be quite refreshing on a hot summers day. Not really my type of beer though and i won’t be in a hurry to try again.

Flaska från Belgiuminabox. Gyllengul aningen disig vätska med ganska lågt skum och mycket sediment. Klassisk trippel. Gyllene smaker av säd, honung, sharonfrukt, söta päron. Potent med värmande alkohol men bra balanserad. Trevlig.
