750mL bottled 1/7/2004 Striking color immediately noticeable as it is being poured. One of the deepest, brightest and most appealing mixes of burnished copper, fiery orange and brilliant gold that I’ve seen in a beer. Large amounts of beige head that lasts to the end of the beer and creates ample lacing. Huge amount of sediment left over, creating a good amount of haziness in the beer. Aroma continues to impress; a juicy, fruity, light citrus hops flavor is just bursting out of the glass. Not overly dry or bitter, but has sweet orange liqueur notes, candied peaches, ruby red grapefruits and behind all this lurks a perfect amount of rich, classic caramel malt. Flavor, as I know have expected, is fantastic as well. Begins with juicy hops, light orange and grapefruit notes, but flavorful as opposed to just astringent or bitter. Caramel malt is perfectly wedded to the hops, with a light chewiness. Finishes medium-dry with caramel/toffee and light herbal/grass notes. Candied orange notes linger on the palate. Carbonation is perfect, that is to say, it has a light bubbly effect on the palate that keeps the beer lively and deceptively light, though the body is medium-full with no traces of thinning. Sadly, after the beer had warmed and breathed, there were distinct notes of raw alcohol in both the aroma and flavor, which did bother my experience somewhat. Had it not been for that, this might very well have been a 5. And I don’t even like IPAs that much!

2002 vintage shared with Bucknaked 4/30/2005. Aroma is still very hoppy, though the caramel has taken over quite a bit. There are still some dry, lightly bitter tangerine notes. Flavor has gone a quite down the hill, too much oxidation it seems, which I thought it odd, being only 3 years old and in a large bottle. Cardboardy somewhat, dry and chewy yeast presence, with some muddled caramel and sugar flavors. Not much in the way of hops left, though it isnt really BAD aside from the oxidation. 8/5/6/4/15 Above rating is an average of the two.

Clearish copper orange body, thin off-white head. Earthy, biscuity aroma with caramel and light fruit. Sweet, fruity, caramely body with grassy, earthy hops mostly as a backdrop. Almost a hint of strawberry in here. Rather thin-bodied but still tasty. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle!

XBF05 draught. Vibrant yellow, with some light orange tints, big white head and a fruity, leafy, and slightly earthy aroma of pine, citrus, and alcohol esters. Very bitter immediately, but has a very good body on it, which helps add texture and some soft, fruity, almost creamy honey notes. But the powerful hops take over and bite at the palate towards the end, cautioning you for the swallow. And as I swallow, there is a burning sensation and huge bitterness. Another unbalanced Double IPA, though this one has plenty of malt and a good body, just way too much hops. I guess that’s the style though. What ever happened to brewing a beer like Yulesmith or 90 minute? Those are wonderfully balanced Double IPAs (at least 90 minute used to be). Oh well. Full body, engaging mouthfeel, almost like it is from a cask. Stoudt’s does a great job brewing a high quality beer, this one just isnt my thing.

Yum. A sweet stout and a big one to boot. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this brew poured a dark black color with only a trace of a dark brown head. The aroma is fairly mild but has some sweet malt to it. The flavor is sweet chocolate, coffee and a nice hop presence that intensifies towards the finish. As it warms this beer gets a nice mellow sweet roundness to go with the hop profile. A nice beer that I will come back to.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 14th, 2005: Pours a murky, surprisingly bright orange color with a medium light beige head. Thin lacing. Satisfying aroma of citrusy hops and spice. Medium-bodied with a pretty strong hops profile, along with grapefruit and a perfect amount of malt balance. Alcohol is well-hidden. The finish is nicely bitter and clean, making this beer a great surprise.

Slightly hazy orange coloured body with super small bubbles rising from the bottom constantly, topped by a nice off-white head that lasts for a good while. Aroma of grapefruit, pine and slightly floral hops, a nice malt presence and a slight alcohol aroma. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spicey hop flavour up front with a large malt backbone throughout. Alcohol warms the palate after the sip is gone. Aftertaste still shows some bittering hops, but a decent mouthwarming sensation. Overall, a well crafted imperial ipa that is more aligned with a normal IPA drinker, compared with over the top imperials, such as ruination. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 03-January-2005.

A slight improvement over the original but really can’t hang with the "big dogs" in the Imperial Stout world. Pours an almost opaque dark brown with a miniscule tan head that was gone right away. Very little lacing as well. Toasted malt and coffee aroma. The body is rich after awhile but it is so dry, with so much hops and coffee on the front end it made my hair stand on end. Malt and chocolate show up to the party later. The finish is dry and roasty and bitter. I would get this again but as an Imperial Stout it falls short, as it needs more body and more balance.

Clear yellow golden coloured body with a thin white head. Aroma of stale, cardboardy malt. A slight hoppiness in the scent, but nothing pleasant. Light-bodied; Tart and metallic maltiness up front with a subtle citrus taste and nothing else-no hops or sugars. Aftertaset shows a bland cardboard taste. Overall, VERY lacking-this one was way worse than expected! I’ll stick to the 765 mL bottles. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 07-December-04.

2003 bottle thanks to JCW!! Pours with an absolutely incredible amount of foamy beige head which is very long lasting. Medium-dark olive brown color with some orange hues and an almost purple tone to it. Murky and bottle conditioned. Aroma has a ton of unmalted roasted barley in it which provides a huge dose of vinousness and rich barley flavor. Notes of plums, figs and grapes. Flavor. Wow, this is a day-after beer if I’ve ever had one. What I mean is that it becomes a much better beer after it has been opened and allowed to sit out overnight, at least in my experience. Right when opened, it is so highly carbonated that the carbonation disrupts the body and does not allow the oily, rich, cohesive body to be appreciated. After it has mellowed, however, this beer is divine. Copious amounts of barley give it a very vinous flavor; tons of rich barley notes, concord grapes and bocky wininess. Starts out with a dry, earthy, dusty yeastiness and progresses in to the rich roasted barley body, which is lightly sweet and has a dose of bitter noble hops. The hops impart flavor moreso than bitterness, but the beer is not overly sweet to begin with so it needs little balancing bitterness. Transitions in to a smooth dark chocolate flavor and finally finishes with a strong dose of bocky wininess. Caramel malt lingers lightly in the background throughout. Fantastic dunkel, and I’m very appreciative of John for sending this. I will certainly be buying this when it comes out next Spring.

Reddish brown ale with an off-white head. Fuzzy hops aroma, pinous and earthy. Fresh sweet malts and raisins, vinous, with good restrained hop finish. Close to a barley wine. Good rich bodied. Very nice. Bottle sampled with TiggMtl, MartinT, muzzlehatch and Rastacouere.
