Cask-conditioned at the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 31/1/09. Near black in colour with a creamy tan head. Aroma of liquorice, caramel, and dried fruit. Flavour was also sweet, with some prunes, blackcurrants, more liquorice and and long dry finish. Very enjoyable.

I was happy to find this one on cask at Aikemans in St Andrews the day before Halloween. Served at a comfortable drinking temperature, and found to be a real ale in excellent condition. Clear russet coloured body, with little head to speak of. Quite tempting smell of anise and dark malts. The flavour is a mixture of berries, sweet caramel malts and dark fruits. Medium bodied . A well made, drinkable ale for the season [30.10.2008].

Half pint, hand pulled and well kept cask at Guildford Arms. Good looking with its deep golden brown body, and a thin head that laces moderately around the glass. Smell of sweet malts followed by a flavour of leafy hops and some hints of caramel malts. Rounded bitter endnotes. Edinburgh, 23.10.2008.

Cask at Horniman at Hay’s. Buttery aroma, some diacetyl I think, over a reasonably hoppy bitter. It’s in good nick except for the slight butter. OK bitter.
