Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars’ Scottish beer festival, Bristol 02/09/09. Dark amber with a slight, off-white head. Red fruits and sweet malts all round with a moderately bitter finish. Ok.

500 ml bottle from my friend in Aberdeen. I appear to be the third rater from the US! Nose is grassy and citrusy with some light sweetness and caramel. Clear copper with a medium off white head. Flavor is lightly sweet, bready, and malty with raelly no bitterness, only a hint of white pepperiness in the finish.

Cask@GBBF 2009. Almost opaque brown color, small tan head. Nice licorice and tar in the nose. Sweetish flavor with loads of sweet licorice and caramel. Light tar in the aftertaste. A bit smokey too.

Cask@GBBF2009. Pitch black colour, small brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, liquorice and some slight dark fruits. Flavour is quite much the same. Dark fruits, fudge and coffee along with some slight roasted notes dominate the quite pleasant aftertaste.

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Opaque black in colour with a decent tan head. Roasted malt and sweet, milk chocolate aroma. Fairly light mouth feel, with some thin roasted malts, almost ashy, more sweet lactose chocolate, and a dryish finish. Tailed off a bit after a very good first inmpression, but still drinkable. Good.

Bottled. Pitch black colour, small brown foamy head. Aroma is liquorice, caramel and quite nice wooden nose. Flavour is strong salted liquorice, along with some wood and roast + caramel malts. Salty finish. Strange brew, but at the same time quite pleasant.

Bottled (at ChrisO’s, BB 01/2010). Dark nut brown color, small steady beige head. Oak, licorice and strong cardboard in the nose. Very intensive flavor of salted licorice. Long salty aftertaste. Liquerish palate. Bottle has most likely past its prime, because aroma was not very good, but powerful salt licorice flavor is still there.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Hazy reddish amber with a thick cream head that heavily laces the glass; citrus aroma; zingy in the mouth with orange fruit flavours and chewy roasted malts; fruity gently bitter finish. Very pleasant. One of the best of the JDW festival ales.
