Deep black, tiny bit of head. Smells like. . .milk mixed with barley malt and alcohol. This beer really brings out the difference in tastes amongst people. I didnt taste much roasty coffee, or chocolate. It was sweet milk flavor with some malt and grainy taste, finishing with a warm liquor taste. Soooo much lactose, almost like sweet cream about to spoil. It's not terrible to sip, and taste better with the right food. It certainly had a good amount of body, just not very complex, or balanced. WAY too much lactose taste. RERATE. Bottle. Wow this is much better, like a different beer. Huge cloying lactose induced milk taste is not there, there is actually a nice dry coffe flavor and even some roasted notes on the palate. Still pretty watery as it finishes.

Black as the night. Pours very thick...with a very dark brown coloured head. Sweet malty smell! Sweet flavour full of malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium bodied, but a great sweet aftertaste! A good all-around malty beer!

Mackeson XXX did not disappoint when I first tried it after reading about the "milk stout" style of beer awhile back. Very sweet and rich. Mackeson is a bit thin for a stout, but the rich, creamy flavor is all that can be asked for. Put down that homogenized, Vitamin A & D shit and grab the real thing! This is my favorite stout after the Bells' varieties.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. One of the best 5 beers of the 50 I tried that evening. Pours an oily black with a thin beige head and minimal lacing. Aroma of chocolate. Smooth and creamy with a complex flavor and a light alcohol finish that made it a rather cozy beer! 2/7/03 - 8-year aged bottle: Someone from work brought me an 8 year-old bottle of this and I had to try it. Pours the same color and the head was much thicker than I expected it would be. Aroma was very powerful, consisting of prunes, chocolate truffles, and fruit. Flavor did not hold up as well, so I think 8 years may be a little long (rating not affected by this tasting).

As the bottle itself states, there is a very bitter sweet taste to this beer. A little too much of both actually, if that's at all possible. The finish almost makes up for it with a roasty, chocolate flavor. This is a bit on the thin-bodied side, with some fruit flavor that I can't put my finger on, but I'd never expect from a stout. There is also something about this that reminds me of Xingu, but not in a good way.

One of those macrobrewed British IPAs (like Deuchars) - far too light for the style and not very interesting.
