Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.

Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

Bottle from Drinkoteka, shared with Zhenya. Hazy brown-red body, off-white head. Soy sauce, dried cranberries, light dried figs in the sweetish aroma. Dry, bitter taste, alcoholic and roasty, bit soapy, very much warming... oof... this is rough, aggro even. Really killed Zhenya, but not with alcohol. This is very much too much even for 14%!

0.75 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (online), best before December 2029. Hazy, reddish amber with a medium large, slightly fluffy, quickly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, rather fruity aroma of lots of fig, honey and orange jam. Slightly sweet, quite dry, minimally sourish and rather fruity taste of fig, honey, orange jam, hints of rhubarb and touch of grains, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, minimally tartish and rather dry finish. Medium body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, sparkling carbonation. I quite liked the base beer but I'm - again - not totally convinced by the use of the champagne yeast. However, it seems like less ingredients are used for this 'variant'. Tasty, refreshing beer anyway, fun to try for sure.

330ml bottle. Opalescent, orange golden colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Minimally grainy, bready, strawy, pale malty and minimally grassy hoppy aroma, rather cautious overall. Taste is slightly strawy, minimally bready, pale malty with some residual sweetness, mildly bitter, grassy hoppy. Watery texture, smooth, minimally dry palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. Rather watery and cautious - so-so.

0.75 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (online), best before end of 2029. Almost clear, deep amber with a thin, frothy, quickly collapsing, white head. Sweetish, slightly malty, rather herbal-spicy and a bit fruity aroma of lemon, ginger, licorice root, rosemary and hints of honey. Slightly sour, moderately bitter, a bit sweet, rather herbal-spicy and slightly fruity taste of ginger, licorice root, rosemary, thyme, honey and overripe lemon, followed by a short, moderately tart, gently dry finish. Almost medium-bodied, slightly astringent and fairly effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Interesting beer, quite herbal, fairly dry but not unpleasant. Surely not to everyone's liking, not sure if the high attenuation works that well in here.

0.75 l bottle from 'AleHub', cellared for a year. A bit hazy, golden amber. Slightly sweetish, sourish, rather vinous-fruity and a little funky aroma of white wine, vinegar, overripe gooseberry, light lemon and hints of hay. Slightly sweet, quite sour, rather vinous-fruity, minimally funky taste of white wine, overripe gooseberry, lemon, vinegar, some oak and traces of hay, followed by a medium long, fairly tart, gently dry finish. Medium body, oily mouthfeel, flat. Quite different to the beer-wine-hybrids from Freigeist and Stillwater, interestingly completely flat, still with that vinegary touch but much more pleasant and with a bigger focus on the wine flavours. Quite nice!

0.75 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (online), best before December 2029. Hazy, golden yellow with a massive, foamy, quickly collapsing, white head. Sweetish, sourish, gently funky and slightly fruity aroma of hay, lemon, rhubarb and light vinegar. Quite sour, moderately funky and gently fruity taste of lemon, rhubarb, wood, vinegar and hay, followed by a short, fairly tart, moderately dry finish. Thin to medium body, fairly astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Interesting Weiße, but too sour for my liking, not very complex, I don't dig that typical vinegar touch from the Freigeist coolship beers. Somehow I liked the 'Super Vintage 2017' much better, would have been interesting to try them side by side.
