Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.
Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

Bottled 750ml. -at Ambasada Zagreb, shared with Hrabren. No year stated on the label. Unclear orange/apricot coloured, no head at all, light grapes and funky nose. Tart fruit, grapes, yeast, mild spices and funky notes in the finish. Bit one-dimensional but nice.

0.75 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (online). Very hazy, pale orange with a thin, frothy, quickly collapsing, white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, rather smoky and gently fruity aroma of apricot, smoked ham, rhubarb and lemon. A little sweetish, fairly sour, quite fruity and gently smoky taste of rhubarb, lemon, vinegar, smoked ham and apricot, followed by a medium long, very tart finish. Medium body, quite astringent and gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Too sour for my liking, like with all coolship beers from Freigeist, decent flavours though.

Bottle pour from Friar Tuck, Crestwood. Lightly hazy, dark honey brown with light sparkle, thin head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is fig, caramel, background wheat. Taste is slightly caramel, slightly wheat malt bill, mild fruit but not ester/banana quality. Smooth thick texture, flat-to-soft carbonation, finish as taste. True to the description on the bottle, less ester-driven than Bavarian Weisse but hops they advertise are not here--am guessing this may be quite old though the lack of enthusiasm is not just mine.

0.33 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (online), best before September 2024. Black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently roasty and slightly vinous-fruity aroma of dark chocolate, roasted hazelnut, coffee, raisins and port. Very sweet, malty, quite roasty and gently vinous-fruity taste of chocolate, coffee, licorice, roasted hazelnut, raisins and port, followed by a short, gently roasty-bitter finish. Medium to full body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Delicious brew, very pleasant even if not overly complex. Great match.
