Cask-conditioned at the Bow Bar, Edinburgh 21/6/2013. Amber with a tight white head. Citrus fruit, with some grassy hops, biscuity malts and a lingering, bitter finish. Enjoyable.

On cask @ the Stockbridge Tap. Pours a dark amber colour with a nicely proportioned head. The nose is quite gentle - delicate hops, maybe a touch of smokiness. The taste has more going on and it’s mostly malty - there would seem to be quite a lot of crystal malt in there and maybe some smoked as these come through at different stages. On the palate, the alcohol is well hidden though the finish is just a bit too astringent for me. Overall, an interesting ale though probably more interesting than good.

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness. It pours clear amber with a thick beige head. The nose is wood, earth, toffee, light toast, apricot and peach. The taste is earth, wood, leather, decent bitterness, toast, light spice and a touch of citrus with a set finish. Medium body and fine-moderate carbonation. Good balance. Nothing particularly exciting, but a solid bitterness nonetheless.

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness. It pours pale golden with a medium bubbly white head. The nose is rich-tea biscuits, farmyard, touch of citrus and hay. The taste is biscuit, grassy, floral, pithy citrus (lemon & grapefruit) and soapy dishwasher with a dry, bitter finish. Light-medium body and fine carbonation. So-so, doesn’t quite live-up to it’s name.

Bottle from Deeside Drink Emporium. It pours deep red with a small white head. The nose is red berry, toffee, earth and a hint of farmyard. The taste is red berry, faint hint of jam, decent bitterness, pithy lemon, light toffee and straw with a dry finish. Light-medium body and fine carbonation. Not bad.

Bottle from Deeside Drink Emporium. It pours golden yellow with a small white head. The nose is sweetish pale malt, pithy citrus, hay and a touch of farmyard. The taste is straw, zesty lemon, grapefruit, peppery and quite high bitterness with a dry, citric finish. Light body and fine carbonation. A decent light hoppy ale, but nothing special.

Cask at Blackfriars, Inverness. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is treacle, brown sugar, dark fruits and instant coffee. The taste is roasted malt, earth, cocoa, coffee, ash, light tang and dark fruit with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Smooth and flavoursome.

(Bottle.) Pours a very dark brown/red colour with a decent head, though it dissipated quickly. Very strong malt smell with smokey overtones. Taste is malt with the smoke leaving a lasting backtaste. Chocolate, nuts and some sort of fruit in the flavour as well. It’s not one of my favourites but that’s just my taste rather than the beer itself. There’s quite a lot of flavours but it’s well balanced and doesn’t feel, as can often happen, like there are too many flavours and that none stand out.

Cask @ Benleva Hotel, Drum
Pitch black, bubbly dark tan head with some lacing
Aroma - soft dark roast malts, touch of chocolate, surprisingly light aroma, no alcohol at all
Taste - soft deep dark malts, rich dark chocolate malts, soft earthy malts, touch of dark berry fruits, very soft coffee, alcohol well hidden, quite complex, smooth flavour
Palate - very soft carb, medium to full body, powdery texture. Finish - rather dry, bit powdery with soft deep rich and quite sweet roasted chocolate malt....also some soft burnt earthy roast
Overall - Well made imperial stout - it’s not hard to drink for the abv

Gravity dispense at Ascot Racecourse Beer Festival 2012 - 06/10/12. Chestnut brown with a thin tan head. Malt forward nose, some hops, toffee, dark caramalised sugars and a little sniff of chocolate. Tastes a little soapy, malt, barley, toffee and nutty. Medium bodied with little carbonation leading to a dry bitter finish.
