Description
Why KelSo?
The name "KelSo" is an amalgamation of the Brewmaster's name, Kelly Taylor, and that of his wife, Sonya Giacobbe. It was their goal to create flavorful, fresh and easy drinking beers for the people of Brooklyn and greater New York City. Since inception in 2006, we have met scores of people who have an association with the name Kelso. Whether a home-town (WA state and Scotland have towns named Kelso), a friend's last name, or a TV character, we've been happy to note that those associations have been markedly positive. We hope to consider the trend.
Kelly got his start in the brewing industry in 1991 at Karl Strauss Breweries in San Diego, where he worked in the brewery and restaurant through college. In 1994, he designed and built the 7BBL Eagle Brewing Company in his hometown of Mukilteo WA, and brewed for the 15BBL Glacier Peak Brewing Co/ Flying Pig Brewery in nearby Everett. In 1995 he became Head Brewer and General Manager at Whidbey Island Brewing Company of Langley, WA, overseeing brewery production, brewpub construction, and expansion to Seattle and North County markets. In 1996 Kelly left Whidbey Island to work with Pyramid Breweries in their Special Events/Marketing department in downtown Seattle, and was on the training staff that opened the Pyramid facility in Berkeley, CA later that year. In 1998, Kelly moved to New York, where he eventually became Head Brewer at the Heartland Brewery restaurant group. In 2002 he designed, built, and brewed at the Heartland facility in Brooklyn, and in 2006 launched KelSo. Kelly currently oversees over 5,000bbl of KelSo production, and is constantly tweaking recipes to get that "Simply Good" KelSo flavor.

Notes from June 2009 Half growler from New Beer. I forgot I had a spare. Four bucks for the fill. Lunch time. :D Violent flip of the cap. Beer pours out a dirty copper. Beige-colored head, it has just a twinge of orange. Smell is of sweet, resiny & floral hops, duck sauce, oat bran, & a long lemon/melon note. Taste is again floral, but there's also an apricot/orange thing going on. The hops eventually generate a little bit of minty tin though. Some dusty grain does join in eventually, helping build some vague semblance of a doppelbock, I guess. Slightly greasy, decently carbed(frothy even), very little(if any) roast, hop centric, balanced alcohol, & quite fruity too. What gives?! A decent beer, but just all over the place.

On tap @Dean Street in BK, Jan '17. Miss it hard. Nitro edition. :D Smell is a little muted. Char, dusty dark malt, nut shells. Semi-sweet, toasty, mallow-y, husk- y, earthy sort of bitterness. Very peanuty as it warms. Velvety nitro, but slightly sticky as it melts.

12 oz can from Halftime. Golden pour, thick foamy head, lively carbonation. Grainy aroma, adjunct grains, paper. Taste is grainy, sweet, dry, peppery. Aroma throws off the taste. Its decent, but something seems a little off.

12 oz. can purchased at Bowery Whole Foods in New York City. Pours a light gold color with a tiny white head and poor retention. Sparse lacing. No real aroma to speak of. Light pilsner malt flavor with light sharpness. Light sweetness and limited bitterness. Clean and semi-crisp finish. Easy drinking. Pretty good.

Deep dark brown coloured body that shows at about 80% opacity with a nice, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, light nuts and a larger earthiness, some lighter caster sugar and sweet elements and finishing with a lot of chocolate and oatmeal characteristics. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive toasted malt flavours at first with a heavier hand of lactose and cacao notes with some oatmeal, grain and toffee all around the fringes. Aftertaste shows more of a malty kick with the earth and grain noticeable at first, but some light sweetness followed by a bit of the pure chocolate near the end makes this go down quite easily. Not much complexity and there isn't a big depth of malty flavours or a pungency from the yeast, since this still does show as a lager, despite it's bit malt side of things. Overall, a nice beer to sample and showing some good characteristics considering the style, but nothing too amazing or crazy, just a nice one to sample if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 24-February-2018 for US$2,25 sampled at home in Monroe, Connecticut on 09-March-2018 with my brother and sister-in-law.
