Bottle during the RBWG Lobby Share. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head. The aroma is roast, wood, and chocolate. Medium mouth with rich chocolate, wood, roast. Very nice.

Ugly hazy dull tan, thin bubbly head. Bitter, but full body with light doughy malts, the hops have a pear note, mellow citrus. Tastes pretty good even though it smells a little off.

Bottle shared during the RBESG 2014 Sunday tasting at Craft Beer Co. Clerkenwell. Vintage 2012. Pours clear, rich amber with a creamy tan head. The nose smacks of alcohol, with some ripe fruits and wood, along with fruitcake. Medium sweet flavor with some crunchy grains, bread, aged fruits, toffee. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with gooey malts, dried fruits. Not bad.

22oz bottle of the 2012 vintage pours a murky amber with some creamy, white head. Nose has a mix of orange, malt, candy sugar, some sour wood notes, a little absinthe in that way, some raisin, mild booze, some floral notes. Flavor follows, sweet, toffee, caramel, some booze, some mild tropical fruit, some candy, a little worm wood, some pine and orange, maybe a little soap, raisin, some melon. This vintage may be caught in a weird down period. The hop is gone, so is the booze. What’s left is some oily alcohol and candy sweetness. Lacks the leathery character of further aged barleywines. If you’re still holding a 2012 then I’d say hang on to it for at least two more years. If you’re holding the current version then drink it.

Good copper body with a solid band of head that stays just right there for your enjoyment. Heavy aroma of hops with a hint of Belgian gueuze on the side. Flavour is strong hoppy notes but thin on the back end, starts strong and eases back. Not as chewy as I would have liked, still refreshing nonetheless.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Cloudy orange-golden color with creamy head. Nice aroma, a but pungent, fruity hops, sweet oranges. Good body strength, sharp, maybe too yeasty, but also with a good fruity and spicy character, and quite strong bitterness.
Rough but good.
