Bottle. Pours black. Tan head. Nose is cocoa, chocolate and roasted black malt. Taste is mostly burnt black malt, cheap burnt coffee and burnt chocolate malt. Dry burnt black malt finish. Chalky mouth feel. Lightish body.

Cask at the Bree Louise. Pours clear gold with a light head. Some toasty malts on the nose with a glance of citrus. Medium sweet flavor. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Has a slightly bitter finish with decent balance (yeah, the description is actually pretty fair) and light dough. Alright.

Decent taste, standard color, but I really don’t like the herbs or spices I smell. Also low body, low carbo. Not very good.

Cask at the Plough and Harrow (JDW), Hammersmith. Bright amber with a loose white head; citrusy, fruity, aroma; rich with a fruity flavour - reminding me of apricot jam; the finish has biscuit and some zingy grapefruit. Very appealing, and excellent compromise between light golden ales and traditional bitter - the best of both.

50cl bottle. Pours opaque black with a red hue. Has a nice creamy beige head - most fades in a few minutes, but a thin attractive layer of lace hangs around. The nose has a lovely Crunchie Bar note - toffee, chocolate and and fizzy. The taste has chocolate, smokiness and bitter coffee. The palate is medium bodied with a medium creamy and effervescent texture and quite a bitter finish. Overall, appealing on the nose and front of palate but I was hoping for the type of Porter that faded away gently at the end, rather than the astringent finish it has.

More oranges on the nose and taste this time, maybe even apricot. The palate and overall effect is much better this time! Previous rating 19/06/11 6/4/7/4/14 = 3.5 50cl bottle. Pours a hazy golden with steady bubbles and a good head. The nose has pine and grapefruit. The taste has grapefruit pith, some floral notees, then a pine & pith finish. The palate medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fresh zingy finish. Overall, a tastey beer that could be sessioned too.

50cl bottle. Pours brown with a generous head and gentle bubbles. The nose is distinctly ginger biscuits and maybe a note of oranges on the end - very Christmas. The taste is of more spice, this time cinnamon as well as ginger as well as the background biscuit thing. The palate is medium to full in structure, there is a nice creamy texture in the middle section and it concludes not completely cleanly, but fairly well nonetheless. Overall, I’m drinking this in the summer (albeit a Scottish Summer) and this Christmas style ale is going down very well.
