Description
Brewing started behind the Royal Clarence Hotel, and in those days trading as the Royal Clarence Hotel Brewery, in Burnhan-on-Sea in August 1982. A 5 barrel brew plant was used primarily to supply the hotel only. The brewery was taken over in May 1984 and the beers became more available in the free trade. Due to problems with the water supply, the brewery was using that much that hotel guests could not wash, the brewery moved in January 1993 to an old cider mill in West Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. Capacity was tripled during the move and in 2000 work started on upgrading the plant to a 30 barrel brew length. The brewery closed in early 2017 but relaunched shortly afterwards as Pitchfolk Brewery.

(Cask, Wenlock Arms, London, 22 July) Copper colour with little head. Nose is fruity and hoppy with lots of citrus (grapefruit, mandarin). Same goes for the taste: fruity and hoppy with lots of grapefruit and some dust towards the finish. Good underlying malty backbone. Long hoppy finish. Nice one!

Cask handpull at Market Porter, Borough. Pale copper colour with lasting beige head. Strong piney hop aroma. Maybe US in style. Nice juicy malt in mouth and then heavy resiny hop finish. Grapefruit and sticky sweet hop on end. Nice though. Would have had another if it wasn’t for those other 11 pesky handpulls

Cask conditioned at Far from the Madding Crowd, Oxford 15-07-06 Standard mid brown colour beer that sadly didn’t have an awful lot to rave about. Not as hoppy as I was hoping and lacking any oomph... in fact lacking a little in all departments but overall It pulled through a bit better and would make a reasonable if unexciting session bitter. The aroma is a touch malty and with some lingering caramel. tangy and fruity beer with a reasonable bitterness and bite considering the low abv. Its fine and a good little session ale and better than when I had last time so an upward moving re-rate. A6 A4 F6 P3 Ov13 3.2

Cask gravity at Catford BF 06. Clear gold with disappearing head. Some caramel on this, otherwise a bit dull. Some hop on end. OK, but dull.

Bottled picked up in Herefordshire. Pours a warm golden colour with a white quite frothy head, definately quite hoppy but also citrusy lemonyness and good crisp bite the best of the RCH beers I’ve had but still I have had much better.

Bottle picked up in Herefordshire. Pours a dark brown with coffee and hint of dark chocolate in the aroma, has a roasted flavour and is quite dry but a little bit of sweetness. I have had this beer frequently, why I don’t know as I have never been particularly impressed

Bottled Herefordshire. Reddy brown coloured, some hops and malt present in the aroma but not too much, malty and pleasantly bitter this was a good if unspectacular ale.

Cask at Rook & Gaskill York 5 May 06. Brown colour. A creamy white lasting head clinging to the glass. Very pretty. Fruity aroma. A nice bitter aftertaste - after a while.
